Be it known that I, ANTONIO TRAVAGLINI, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mats or Mattings, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to certain improvements in mattings composed of a plurality of juxtaposed pieces, preferably made of leather or analogous material and arranged in rows, said pieces being provided with perforations at or near their ends wherein rods are placed to keep the said pieces in assembled position; and the object of my invention is to provide simple and eective fastening devices for said rods when in position in the said perforations. t

My invention consists of an end or cap piece adapted to lie adjacent to and along the edge of the matting, said pieces being provided with sockets adapted to receive and secure the ends of the wires, thus serving to bind the mat together when in assembled position and to conceal the Wires from view.

My invention further consists of the novel features of construction and arrangement of parts, all of which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

Fig. 3 represents a longitudinal section of one of the end or cap pieces removed, showing the ends of the wires about to be inserted within the sockets therein. Fig. 4 represents an inverted plan view ofthe cap or end piece. Fig. 5 illustrates a modification.

Referring to the drawings, A designates the matting, composed of a plurality of juxtaposed strips arranged `in contiguous rows B, each of the said strips being provided with perforations O, adapted to receive therein wires D, the latter being arranged to project beyond the outermost strips, as shown clearly ent, is as follows: 1

The wires D are preferably pro- 5o vided with heads or projections D, which are intended to enter sockets E, provided on the inner face of the end or cap piece F, also clearly shown in Fig. 2. The sockets E are formed in bosses arranged on the inner face of the cap or end piece F, said sockets being slightly larger at their mouths or openings in order that the ends of the rods may be easily inserted therein; but the inner ends of said sockets are contracted, so that when the heads 6o4 I of the wires have been pressed all the way in a` surrounding space will be left above the heads, so that when the walls of the sockets have been closed in around the heads the wires Will be securely retained in the position and completely concealed from view. The closing in of the walls of the sockets around the wires may be accomplished in any convenient manner obvious to those skilled in the art.

Instead of the heads shown and described 7o the ends of the wires may be simply roughened or burred, as shown in Fig. 5, to form projections, so that when the walls of the sockets are closed in upon these roughened or burred ends the cap or end piece will be held in place and the wires thus secured against displacement.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patl. A matting of the character described, composed of a plurality of juxtaposed strips, said strips being provided with perforations, rods adapted to said perforations and having, heads or projections, and end pieces adapted to lie adjacent to the edge of the matting, said end pieces being provided on their inner sides with sockets to receive the headed ends of said rods, whereby the latter are held against displacement and concealed from view.

A matting of the character described composed of a plurality of juxtaposed perforated strips, rods adapted to said perforations whereby said strips are held in assembled position, said rods being provided with end proj ec- 95 tions, and end pieces provided on their inner sides with sockets adapted to receive the ends of the rods, the walls of said sockets being to receive therein the ends of the Wires lWhereby the mat and said wires are heid against 1o displacement.
