Letters Patent No. 62,143, dated February 19, 1867; antedatcd February] 4, 1867.
IMPROVBD RAILROAD BOX AND JOURNAL.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, GEORGE F. LYNCH, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, 'and Stute of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Boxes und Journals for Railroad Cars or other carriages, und which muy be used for shaft or journal bearings' generally, und that the following is a. full, clear, and exact description of the some, reference being hud to the accompanying drawings, marking e. part of this specilioetion, in whichl Figure 1 represents a. sectional perspective rien' of :t bor; und jonrnul :is designed for mili-ond curs.

The sleeve or covering nitty he shrunk on to the wrought-iron portion, or otherwise secured thereto. The rollers being of n tupcrin g forni, their rolling surfaces ure so arranged as to equalize, or nearly so, their relative surface speed or motion. It will be perceived that the journal Grund the rollers E rollnguinst end in concert with each other. The rollers E roll against und in concert with the rollers D', placed between them, und in the line of their length, und against the rings C, et the chnmiered corners c, at their ends. 'lhegrollers D', in addition to their rolling motion against and with the rollers E', also roll against or with the rings B, bytheir necks a, whichV keep them in proper position longitudinally. Thus all the ports, though not positively connected to cach other, are so restrained or kept in proper working position as to prevent cramping or cutting or binding between uny of them. The rings B C are .also unrestrained, being free to move with or independent of the ports bearing on or aga-inst them, thus leaving ull the ports free to move just as the friction for the time being should require of them. By this construction of journal and box,or roller und ring bearings, a. journal h'us been very rapidly run for several hours without nnylubricating material upon it, und without apparent heating or wearing, whlst'the friction has been very materially reduced; und actuel experiment has proven th'ut very.1ittle, `if any, lubrication is required. When the joui-noi is inserted into this roller-box or bearing it keeps ell the parts in their proper positions circumfcrcntiully. Y

Combining with a. box or bearing for un :ixle or journal n. series of rollers ond'rings, not positively fastened to eachother, or-to the box or bearing, but so controlled us to be kept in proper working position, und free to move 'with or .independent of euch other, und with or independent of the journal or shaft, substantially as and or the purpose set forth.
