WILLIAM FRANCIS ALTENBAUGH, OF TIFFIN, OHIO.
lCE-TONGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 621,199, dated March 14, 1899.
A li ti fil d August 23, 1898. Serial NO. 689322. (No model.)
State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ice-Tongs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in ice-tongs; and it consists of certain'novel and useful improvements in the construction of the same, fully disclosed in the specification following, and more particularly pointed out in the concluding claims.
In the drawing the figure represents the tongs constructed in accordance with my invention and as used for handling a piece of ice.
The device consists of two arms or jaws l 1,- connected together at their upper ends by the hinge 2. About mediately of the length of the jaws are rings or eyes 3 3, which I prefer to form by. bending the jaws. A span of chain 4 connects these eyes 3 3 and forms'the handhold or lift for the tongs. The length of the chain 4 is sufficient to permit of a wide opening of the tongs, but must be less than the length of the tongs at the hinged end between the eyes 3 3 to give the gripping action to the tongs. At the lower ends the jaws are curved inward and pointed to form the spurs 5 5.
In handling pieces of ice the tongs are held with the hinged end in the palm of the hand and the fingers grasping the span of chain. The spurs 5 5 are engaged with the ice, and when the handhold-chain is pulled up against the weight of the ice the jaws will be pulled inward and firmly grasp the ice.
WVhile I prefer to use a chain hand-lift grip, itis obvious that I may use rope or other flexible connection.
I claim 1. The combination in grippinghand-tongs, of two jaws, each spurred at one end, and jointed each to the other at their other ends to form a hinge, and each provided with an eye at coincident points about mediately of their length, with a flexible means connecting the jaws from eye to eye and adapted to cause length in combination with a chain hand-lift grip connecting said jaws and adapted to cause the jaws to grip the ice with a force commensurate with the weight of the ice.
3. In a pair of gripping hand-tongs, the combination with the jaws, each spurred at one end, and jointed each to the other at their other ends to form a hinge, and each provided with an eye at coincident points about mediately of their length, of a flexible means connecting the jaws from eye to eye and having a length less than the length of the jaws at their hinged ends from eye to eye, for the purpose stated, the jointed portion of the jaws and the flexible means forming a handhold.
4.. As an article of manufacture, ice-tongs consisting of jaws hinged at their upper ends, bent to form spurs at their lower ends and bent at coincident points about mediately of their length to form eyes, and a chain handhold connecting the eyes.
