To all whom, t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. EHRsAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Enterprise, in the county of Dickinson and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Water-Tube Boiler, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to an improvement in water-tube boilers.
1o vThe objects of my invention are to produce a cheap and efficient boiler of the type named, to provide means by which the tubes may be easily examined and cleaned, to provide a simple air-jacket for said boiler, to provide I5 an improved form of fuel-magazine, and to provide such other improvements as shall be pointed out.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention.
2o Figure 1 is a central vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 2 is a rear end elevation, a portion of the rear plate of the water-back or reservoir being removed. Fig. 3 is a section on line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
z5 In the drawings, 5 indicates a plate which forms the rear end of the boiler. Plate 5 is perforated with a series of holes, into each of which is secured the open end of one of a series of water-tubes (l, the opposite ends of said 3o tubes being closed by any suitable means and the said tubes being entirely supported by the plate 5. In order to'form a water-back or reservoir communicating with the tubes 6, I provide a ring 7 of sufficient internal dimensions to encircle the ends of the tubes 6.
Ring 7 is provided on its interior with a series of perforated ears 8, each of which is adapted to receive a bolt 9, the inner end of which is secured in the plate 5. As shown in the drawings, these bolts 9 are threaded into the plate 5 and the -protruding inner ends riveted over upon the front of said plate. Secured to the outer end of ring 7 by means of the bolts 9, is a plate 10. The central portion of plate 10 is supported by suitable staybolts 11, the inner ends of which are secured to the plate 5 and each of which is provided with a suitable collar 12, against which the plate 10 may be drawn by the nuts 13 on the 5o bolts 10. Mounted upon the ring 7 and com'-` municating with the interior thereof,by means of suitable passages 14, is a steam-dome 15.
The setting consists, in part, of the top plate 16 and the side plates 17 17, each of which side plates is provided at top and bot- 5 5- tom with a flange 1S, towhich is secured a plate 19, thus forming between the two plates 17 and 19 an air jacket or space 20. Leading into space 20, near the top thereof, and through plate 19 is an opening 21, and leading from 6o said space through plate 17 into the combustion-chamber is an opening 22, the arrangement being such that substantially all the air supplied to the combustion-'chamber passes through the spaces 2O and is thereby par- 65 tially heated before passing into the combustion-chamber'.
Secured to the forward ends of the side plates 17 and extendingy between them from the top to a point about midway down is a 7o front plate 23, the said plate lying close to the closed ends Yof the tubes 6. Secured to plate 23 immediately below the first or upper row of tubes 6 and extending back about half the length of said tubes is a baffle-plate 24, and secured to the plate 5 immediately beneath the third row of tubes Gis a similar baffle-plate 25, the said plate extending forward so as to slightly overlap the rear end of the plate 24, the arrangement being such that the 8o heated gases from the combustion-chamber are compelled to circulate from front to rear and back to the front before reaching the stack 26.
Mounted beneath the tubes 6 is a suitable 85 grate 27 and extending upward and forward from the forward end of said grate is a series of supplemental grate-bars 28, the upper forward end of which is secured to the lower part of a fuel-magazine 29, which forms the front 9o of the setting. Magazine 29 extends from the top of the setting and. is provided at its top with a suitable door 30, through which fuel may be introduced. Magazine 29 is also provided atapoint slightlyabove the upper endof the supplemental grate 28 with a second feeddoor 3l, a suitable inclined floor 32 leading from said door to the upper end of said grate.
The magazine is designed, primarily, for the use of light fuel, such as corncobs, and in this roo 2 cease? case the fuel lies piled upon the grates 27 and 28 and is also retained at the sides by the lower tubes 6.
It will be noticed that the plate l0 may be quickly and easily removed, thus giving free access to the interior of the water-back and to the tubes 6.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a Water-tube boiler, the combination with a series of tubes closed at one end, of a plate to which the open ends of said tubes are secured and by which they are entirely supported, and a Water-back or reservoir detachably secured to said plate and communicating with the interior of said tubes.
2. In a Water-tube boiler, the combination with a series ot' tubes closed at one end, of a plate to which the open ends of said tubes are secured, the said tubes being unsupported at their closed ends, a ring secured to said plate and surrounding all of the said open ends of said tubes, and a second plate removably secured to the outer end of said ring, thereby forming a chamber communicating with the said tubes, substantiall y as described.
3. In a Water-tube boiler, the combination with a series of tubes, of a plate to which one end of said tubes is secured, a ring secured to said plate and surrounding the ends of said tubes, and a second plate removably secured to the outer end of said ring thereby forming a chamber communicating with the said tubes, substantially as described.
4E. In a water-tube boiler, the combination with a series of tubes, of a plate to which one end of each of said tubes is secured, a ring secured to said plate and surrounding the ends of said tubes, a series of perforated ears carried by said ring, a series of bolts secured to said plate and passing through said ears, and a second plate secured to the outer end of saidring by means of said bolts.
5. In a water-tube boiler, the combination with a series of tubes closed at one end, of a plate to which the open ends of said tubes are secured, a ring secured to said plate and surrounding the open ends of said tubes, a series of perforated ears carried by said ring, a series of bolts secured to said plate and passing through said ears, and a second plate secured to the outer end of said ring by means of said bolts.
6. In a Water-tube boiler, the combination with a series of tubes closed at one end and supportedat their open ends from a suitable reservoir, of a grate mounted beneath said tubes, a pair of battle-plates mounted between the tubes at different distances from the grate and extending toward each other from opposite ends of the tubes, and a plate 23 mounted at the closed ends of said tubes and extending downward in front of the upper tiers of said tubes.
7. In a Water-tube boiler, the combination with a series of tubes closed at one end and supported at their open ends from a suitable reservoir, of a grate mounted beneath said tubes, and a fuel-magazine mounted at the closed ends of said tubes and communicating with said grate.
8. In a Water-tube boiler, the combination with a series of tubes closed at one. end and supported at their open ends from a suitable reservoir, of a grate mounted beneath said tubes, a supplemental grate extending upward and forward from said grate toward the closed ends of the said tubes, and a fuel-magazine mounted at the closed ends of said tubes and communicating with the upper end of said supplemental grate, substantially as described.
9. In a Water-tube boiler, the combination.
with a series of Water-tubes closed at one end and supported at their open ends from a suitable reservoir, of side plates inclosing said tubes, plates secured to said side plates so as to form an air-space next the side plates, and openings leading into said air-space and from said air-space into the space beneath the tubes, substantially as described.
l0. In a water-tube boiler, the combination with a series of water-tubes closed at one end and supported at their open ends from a suitable reservoir, of side plates inclosing said tubes, flanges carried by said side plates, plates secured to said flanges so as to form an air-space next the side plates, and openings leading into said air-space and from said airspace into the space beneath the tubes, substantially as described.
