To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, OSCAR A. KEIL and J Aims GALLAGHER, citizens of the United States,residin g at Grand Rapids,in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Upholstering; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

Our invention relates to improvements in upholstering; and its object is, primarily, to more securely and conveniently attach the buttons to the fabric and to provide the structure with certain other new and useful features hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an enlarged detail in section, on the line 1 1 of Fig. 2, of a device embodying our invention; Fig. 2, a plan view of the under side of the upper material and reinforcement with a button attached and secured thereto by the lateral prongs; Fig. 3, a reduced section of a portion of upholstered work with buttons in various stages of process of attachment; Fig. 4, an enlarged view of a button as prepared for attachment; Fig. 5, a button with the center prong clenched, and Fig. 6 the same with all the prongs clenched as when finally secured in place.

A represents the upper or outer material, consisting usually of some suitable cloth or leather. B is the lower or inner material, consisting of burlaps, canvas, or other suitable material. C is the tufting, consisting of curled hair, hemp, or other suitable material. E are the buttons, located in the depressions between the tufts. Our invention consists in the novel means of securing these described parts in place, and consists in providing said buttons with a central prong G and two or more lateral prongs F, arranged in a right line across the under side of the button. The central prong G is larger and longer than the lateral prongs and adapted to pass through both the outer and inner material and be turned at its inner end into an eye G, through 0n the inner side of the reinforcements.

The lateral prongs are shorter and extend only through the outer material and reinforcing-pieces D beneath each button and clenched down upon the same, whereby said reinforcements are secured to the inner surface of the outer material. are applied by first securing them at proper intervals to the outer material and reinforcements by passing the prongs through the same and clenching the lateral prongs down The central prongs are then thrust through the inner material, the tufting put in place, and said central prongs clenched or turned around the cords or wires H. The central prong may have an eye Gf formed in its inner end, as in Fig. 5, at the outset and passed through the various layers of material in that form, the wire or cord being inserted through said eye with the same result.

These buttons By the described construction the various parts are most securely held in place and the structure formed with great convenience and rapidity. The reinforcements beneath each button and said buttons being secured in place directly upon the outer fabric by the lateral prongs move therewith and do not wear through the material, and the central prongs are securely held in place in the inner material and prevented from pulling through the same by the cords or wires H, which latter also serve to support the inner fabric in place, and by securingthe same to the frame of the article of furniture also aid in sustain ing the entire upholstering in place.

WVe are aware that buttons having three integral prongs arranged in triangular position and of equal dimensions are not new. We do not claim such broadly.

Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. As an article of manufacture, an uphol stering-button having a large central integral prong and two lateral and smaller integral prongs and arranged in a right line, substantially as described.

2. In combination with the outer and inner material on an article of upholstery, a button having a central integral prong passing through both of said materials and secured thereto by said prong, and lateral integral prongs passing through only the outer fabric and securing the button thereto, substantially as described.

3. In an article of upholstery, an outer and inner layer of materal, a reinforcement on the inner side of the outer material, a button having lateral prongs passing through the outer material and the reinforcement and securing the button thereto, and a central prong on said button passing through the outer material, the reinforcement, and the inner mate rial, and having an eye in its end, and a continuous cord or wire extending along the inner surface of the inner material and through said eye, substantially as described.
