TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
.Be it'known that I, JAMES H. COGSHALL, of Lexington, in the county of Sanilac, and State of Michigan, have inventeda. new and useful Improvement in Nursing-Couch; and I do hereby declare tht the following is a. full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same. reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this speciiicatio'nkin whichi 1 Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of my improved couch, takenthough the line z as, fig, 2.
FigureQ is` a vertical cross-section of the same, taken through the line y y, iig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
My invention has for its object to assist the mother in nursing her child, by compelling h er to sit upright, and at the same time giving that support to the muscles 'of-the arm which'she requires; and it consists of a. couch upon which the child islaicl, which is made adjustable inheight by the vertical screw-that pivots itto the support or standard, which is made adjustable in Vinclination by e semicircular arm and set-screw, as hereinafter more fully described. i y
A is the standard, consisting of the foot or horizontal part a `and the upright Aor vertical part a2. The
upright part a2 is perforated with a vertical hole, in which a screw-thread is cut foi' the reception of the screw B, as shown in fig. 1. C is the couch or table, the lower part of which is made seinicircular in form, or has side flanges, and the whole upper part of which is upholstered, so as to form a secure and comfortable resting-'place for the child, and at the same time a comfortable support for the mothers arm. B is the screw, by meansof which the couch C is pivoted to the support A,.and by means of which the height or elevation of the couch may be regulated at pleasure The upper end of the screw B is pivotcd to the under side of the couch C, as shown in fig. 2, which enables 'the inclination of the couch' C to be varied,`as the comfort or convenience of the mother or child may require. D is a semicircular arm, the ends of which are secured to the under side of Athe conch C, and which passes through and works in a hole o r'slot formed in the upper part of the screw B, ns shpw'n in figs. 1 and 2. The arm D is held in `place, securing the conch or table C at any desired inclination, hy the set-screw E, the oint of which rests :wainst the side of the arm D, clam iin'r it securel f to the Screw B. F are stru s l) n i s 5 P a by lmeans ofwhich the child may be secured to the couch` C, if desired.` The support A, and screw B` may be lmade short, so that the apparatus muy rest upon the mother-s lap; or, if desired, they may be made longer, 'so
ns t0 rest upon thc floor. Pivoting the couch C to the supportA by the screw B, not only enables `the elevation ofthe said couch C to be adjusted as required, but it also enables thc mother to conveniently revolve the child from one bren-st to the other. The upper part or end of the couch C is designed` to support the mother-s arm while nursing the child, thereby relieving her from the consequent fatigue and weariness.
What I claim as new, and desire to lsecure by Letters Patent, is v The nursing-couch, consisting of the support A, screw B, set-screw E, semicircular arms I), table C, and strapsi F, when constructed and arranged as herein set forth.
JAMES H, COGSHALL.
