Description

@eine gisten I getest @frn IMPROVED REVOLVING' TABLE.
itin Segnale referat tu in tigen trtte'rs @tout mit mating ont uf tige smite.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY OONCERN:
Be it known that I, JAMES STEWART, of Bangor, in the county of Penobscot, and State of Maine, have A invented a new and useful Revolving Table and Desk combined; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specication, ln Which Figure l is a perspective view; and
Figure 2 is a vertical section. l
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several gures.
The nature of'my invention consists in placing a revolving table and'desk upon the same pillar and base, with a fixed holder for the inkstand, pen-rack, and other writing implements, said table and desk revolving independently of each other; bywhich means the accountant, student, historian, or other user, is enabled at will, without rising or moving a book, to bring any two of a large number of. volumes together directly before him.
To enable others skilled in the nrt to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation. v
A represents the table, which may be of'any desired form. z'z' are drawers, sliding from the circumference towards the centre of the table. B is an upright pillar, upon which table A revolves; this pillar is firmly secured to the base C. D is a desk, which also revolves freely upon pillar B. This desk, as shown, is formed with pigeon-holes 7i t for the reception of papers, but it is susceptible of various modications in form, and for certain uses its sloping sides can be formed as book-racks for holding the books of reference required bythe user. c is anarm, fitted closely to pillar B, so as to remain in any desired position while the vdesk and table are revolved; but this arm, being held in place only by pressure upon the pillar, maybe revolved, if desired, to any point, relatively to the base, to suit the convenience of the user. c is acollar, fixed upon shaft B, and which serves as the bearing of table A. The lower edge of this collar is formed with a series of. small cogs or teeth, as shown in fig. l. a is a catch, which is hinged at its lower end to base C, while its .upper end fits into the spaces between the cogs upon collar c. dis a thin collar, fixed'upon pillar B. In this collar is cut a recess, into which catch a ts, thus holding it from moving laterally. g is a spring, secured tovbase C at its outer end, while the other end bears under the heel of catch a, as shown, thus throwing the catch forward toward the pillar and into the notches in collar c. cis a pedal, hingedto base C, and connected with catch a by the wire f. Thus the occupant of thc table, when he desires to revolve it, has only to bear 'upon pedal e with his toe, when catch a is liberated-from collar e, and the table revolves freely. And by releasing pedal e the springg instantly returns catch a to its place, securing the table in the desired position. A great-variety'ot` devices may be used for holding and releasing the table. I i v In the use of this invention the occupant can place upon the table such books as he desires to referto, as also'the work or account upon which h e is engaged, while e'ither'another set of Abooks or papers relating to the business in hand occupies thc desk above; and by the independent action of the table and desk any two books upon the table and desk may be brought together, or reference may be had to any book upon the table, or book or paper upon the desk, while the other remains stationary; and while the desk and' table, or either,`are thus changing position, the implements of vwrit-ing remain constantly before the person needing them.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of table A, desk D, and arm c, in mannersubstantially as shown and specified- JAMES STEWART.
