BOOK- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters NORFOLK, NEBRASKA.
MARK.
Patent No. 628,913, dated July 18, 1899.
Application filed December 8, 1898. Serial No. 69 8,660. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE N. BEELs, residing at Norfolk, in the county of Madison and State of Nebraska, have invented certain useful Improvements in Book-Marks; and I do hereby declare that'the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention has relation to a new and novel bookmark and paper-clip, the object of my invention being to provide a neat and simple book-mark which shall also be adapted to be used as a paper-clip, as will be described more fully hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows a top View of my blank as stamped be fore being curved, while Fig. 2 shows a side view of my improved book-mark and clip assembled, showing the method of employing it in securing the papers, which are impinged between my clip by means of an ordinary pin.
My invention embodies, essentially, an elongated blank, comprising the main female section A and the smaller tongue or male portion B.
The female or major portion of my blank embodies an elongated section, preferably having its ends rounded, as is shown at 9 and 00, while from the end m extends the male or tongue portion B, which portions A and B are divided by means of a narrow neck portion 3, the whole being preferably made of sheet spring metal.
The male portion B is provided at its free end with an opening 1, while the main portion A is provided with an approximately rectangular opening 6, into which extends from the center of the clip an auxiliary tongue or nib 5, as is shown in Fig. 1, while nearer the end 9 the major portion of my clip is provided with a circular opening 8.
Approximately centrally between the lines a; as the blank is adapted to be recurved, so that the tongue B passes through the rectangular opening 6 and rests upon the fiat portion 9 of the clip, in which position the auxiliary tongue or nib 5 exerts a pressure upon the male portion or tongue B, as is shown in Fig. 2, so that this tongue B is bound upon the main portion A and held thereon under spring-tension, the openings 1 and 8 being made to register, so that any papers or documents which might be put between the clip may be additionally secured in simply passing an ordinary pin 10 through the registering openings, which pin is then bent, as is shown in Fig. 2, to securely hold the papers between the clip.
Further, my clip is admirably adapted .to be used as a book-mark, in that it can be readily secured to a leaf in a book, so that the intermediate or recurved portion 4 projects beyond the leaves of the book, so that the book can be easily opened.
My invention is noticeable because of its extreme simplicity.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent, is-
1. As a new article of manufacture, a clip comprising a female portion provided with an opening, a nib extending into said opening, an intermediate portion adapted to be recurved, and a male portion adapted to pass through said opening to bind upon said female portion, said nib binding said male portion upon said female portion, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a clip comprising an elongated major portion provided centrally with an opening, a nib extending into said opening, a minor portion connected to said major portion by an intermediate section adapted to be curved so that said minor portion passes through the opening within said major portion, so that said nib binds said minor portion upon said major portion, and registering openings within said stantially as and for the purpose set forth.
