UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WALTER C. CUNNINGHAM, OF ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA.
TOBACCO-PIPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 628,395, dated July 4, 1899.
Application filed January 7, 1 8 9 9.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WALTER C. CUNNING- HAM, of St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Pipes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tobacco-pipes; and it consists in so constructing the bowl and stem that they may be divided .into two parts for the purpose of cleaning, as hereinafter shown and described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
This invention relates to tobacco-pipes; and it consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter shown and described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the pipe member having the screwthreaded cavity, and Fig. 2 is a similar view of the other pipe member or the one having the screw-threaded projection. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of one of the pipe members. Fig. 4 is aplan view in section on the linemaof Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of the member shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
The bowl of the pipe is divided into two parts A A andthe integral stem part thereof is likewise divided into two parts, the division being made vertically and longitudinally, as shown, so that when separated the tobaccocavity 19 and the smoke-channel b will be exposed throughout their entire lengths, so that all the parts with which the tobacco and, the products of the combustion come in contact can be readily cleansed and kept free from the accumulation of nicotine and other deleterious substances.
A circular oifset e is formed upon the part A, partially encompassing the half of the tobacco-cavity b in the part A and provided with an external scre'w thread and adapted to engage aninternal screw-thread in a recess in the part A the recess being indicated at a in Figs. 1 and 4, the recess partially encompassing the half of the tobacco-cavity bin the part A By this simple arrangement, as before stated, every part of the tobacco cavity b and the whole length of the smoke-channel Z2 is exposed when thetwo parts A A are sepa- $erial No. 701,478. (No model.)
rated, so that all the parts with which the tobacco or the products of the combustion come in contact can be thoroughly cleansed and kept free from the accumulation of nicotine or other deleterious matter. Then by the means of the coaction of the screw-threaded recess in the part A and the screw-threaded lug on the part A the two parts are firmly united and held rigidly in contact, while the ferrule clamps the stem-sections together and prevents displacement when not in use. By thus securing the two parts together no separation along the line of the union'between the two parts can take place, but the joint will be maintained at all times in a smoke and nicotine tight condition. This forms a very simple and effective means for fastening the two parts A A together, the juncturebeing completed and rendered more effective by the tapered ferrule D of the mouthpiece, as shown, which when in place firmlybinds the two parts of the stem together.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is 1. As a new article of manufacture, a smoking-pipe formed in two parts divided longitudinally through the bowl and stem so that onehalf the tobacco-cavity in the bowl, and onehalf the smoke-cavity in the stem is in each section, and with one part provided with a recess partially encompassing the tobacco-cavity therein, and with an internal screw-thread within said recess, and with the other part provided with a projection partially encompassing the tobacco-cavity therein, and with an external screw-thread upon said projection adapted to engage the screw-thread in said recess, whereby all parts of the interior of the pipe are accessible when the parts are separated and the two parts firmly united, substantially as set forth.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a smokin g-pi pe formed in two parts divided longitudinally through the bowl and stem so that onehalf the tobacco-cavity in the bowl, and onehalf of the smoke-cavity in the stem is in each section, and with one part provided with a recess partially encompassing the tobacco-cavity therein, and with an internal screw-thread within said recess, and with the other part provided with a projection partially enccmmy hand in the presence of two subscribing passing the tobacco-cavity therein, and with witnesses. an external screw-thread upon said projection adapted to engage the screw-thread in said WALTER OUNNlNGHAM' 5 recess, and a ferrule enclasping the divided In presence of stem, substantially as set forth. LEWIS D. MANN,
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set C. N. WVOODWARD.
