' NITE D STATES PATENT FF-ICE.
\VILLIAM E. PATOHIN, OF ROCHESTER, NEYV YORK.
PENGlL-SHARPENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 627,874, dated June27, 1899.
Application filed June 8, 1898. Serial No. 682,920. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. PATCHIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pencil-Sharpeners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in pencil-sharpeners; and it is the object of the present invention to produce a sharpener which is made from a blank of metal which is stamped previous to being rolled for the purpose of allowing it to be slipped over a pencil and carried thereby, being always ready for use when desired.
More specifically, the invention resides in a pencil-sharpener and device for holding the same to a pocket, which is punched out of a blank of resilient metal and has a longitudinal aperture at one end of which is formed the cutting edge for sharpening the end of the pencil, while the sides of the blank adjacent are bent so as to fit about the circumference of the pencil, the said sharpener being held in place by means of a rubber or metal band and carried upon the pencil, being always ready for use by detaching the sharpener and inserting the point through the aperture adjacent to the cutting edge.
To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain the same consists in the novel construction which will be hereinafter described in detail and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows the pencil-sharpener with the point of a pencil adjacent to the cutting edge, showing the position the sharpener assumes when it is to be utilized for sharpening the pencil. Fig. 2 is an elevation showing the sharpener carried on the pencil. Fig. 3 is a detail View of the blank of metal which has been punched, the blank being shown in readiness to be rolled into semicircular shape, as shown in Fig; 1. of the drawings. Fig. 4 is a perspective View showing the sharpener carried on a pencil and held to apocket.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the piece of metal, which has been stamped or punched in the shape shown in the drawings, having an elongated aperture and the laterally-extending arms B B, while at the opposite end of the longitudinal recess is the cutting edge D, whereby the pencil is sharpened by drawing the point about the concaved surface of the cutting edge. At one end of the sharp-. ener is a projecting portion 'E, which forms a handle when used asa sharpener and forms the holder when used as a pocket-holder, and a rubber or metal band F is provided, which is slipped over the sharpener and the pencil to hold the same securely together when the sharpener may be carried on the pencil in the pocket of the wearer.
In operation as a pencil-sharpener the penoil may be drawn through the longitudinal aperture, as shown, the operator holding the sharpener by the handle E, and the point is readily sharpened, as will be understood.
When the sharpener is not in use, it may be carried on a pencil and the handle'E utilized to hold the sharpener and pencil to the pocket, as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings.
I am aware that it is old in the art to construct pencil-Sharpeners made of a tubing having an aperture through which the pencil is inserted and drawn over the curved or concaved cutting edge. Hence I make no claim for such a construction.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- a A pencil-sharpener struck-out of a single piece of metal and longitudinally apertured and having laterally and slightly curved arms B, a contracted and resilient inwardly and outwardly bent projection E at one end and curved cutting edge D formed at one end of said aperture, the arms B being bent to embrace the pencil, combined with the band for holding the device thereto, said projection E adapted to engage over the edge of a pocket to form a holder, all substantially as shown WILLIAM E. P'ATOHIN.
Witnesses MYRON T. BLY, A. E. SHANNON.
