N4 PETERS, PHDTQAL. YHOGRAPNER, WASHINGTON. D C,
@uitchtats gamut @Hire JOHN A. HOOPER, OF SOUTH ,BERWIOIL MAINE.
Letters Patent No. 62,542, dated March 5, 1867.
IMPROVED NUTMG-GRATER.
dlgirlgrhule aferra tu in tlgese Enters @tout mit making gmini tlge time.
l Be it known that I, JOHN A. HOOPER, of South Berwick, in the county of York, and State of M-aine, have invented a new and useful improvement in Nutmeg-Graters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figurc l represents an elevation; and Figure 2, a longitudinal section of a nutmeg-grater, with my improvement. My invention consists in thc employment of a cylindrical grater fitting within anopening in a handle or holder, and in which latter the grater is made to reciprocate, the same being used in lconnection with a spring and plunger that serve to hold the nutmeg against the grater during the operation of grating until the nutmeg is entirely ground or grated. i
Referring to the drawings, A A represent a holder, provided near one end with a transverse circular openingas shown in tig. 2, in which is fitted, so as to move freely therein, a cylindrical gra'ter, B C. This grater is formed partly of a semi-cylindrical piece of perforated metal,- C, and partly of a solid piece, as showi at B, thus leaving a space for the' particles of grated nutmeg to pass through and out of the same. Tire grater is open :it one end, and provided withl a handle, B, at the otherend." The longitudinal edges of the perforated portion C are made to project at right angles on either side, forming fianges a a', which tit in corresponding grooves in the holder and serve to retain the grater in proper position during the operation of grating. Pins c e are also providedon Vthe ends ofthe grater to. prevent the same from'slippng out of the holder A. One end Of the holder A forms a hollow cylinder communicating with the transverse opening in whi'ch the grater is placed.v In this cylinder isarranged a block or4 follower, F, attached to a coiled spring, m, which is confined in the said cylinder by means of a plhg or cap, D, in-any suitable manner.
The nutmeg N is placed within the cylindrical portion A of the holder, in contact with the grater C, against which it is pressed by means of the follower E and spring the grater being then moved to and fro in the holder, thoronghly'grinding up the nutmeg. I f
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- The combination of the reciprocating cylindrical grater, B C, provided with fiangesa a, the hoi'der A A', the follower F, and spring m, when constructed and Operating substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN A. H OOPER.
