NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. BOYD, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
COM PARTMENT DRUG- -REcEPTAcLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters latent 1\ To. 625,138, dated May 16, 1899.
Application filed November 3, 1898. Serial No. 695,383. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. BOYD, a citizen of the United States, residing at VVashington, in the Districtof Columbia, have inventical properties.
It is well known to those familiar with the drug business that certain drugs or medicines come in the form of roots, lumps, or blocks and also in the form of powders. In drugstores and pharmacies where such drugs or medicines are dispensed or sold it is usual to have two receptacles, one for holding the same in the form of roots or lumps and the other for holding the same in a powdered form.
- The object of my invention is to provide a single receptacle of novel construction in which the drugs in the form of roots or lumps and also in the form of powder may be kept and the roots or lumps be in full view.
I The novel features of the invention will be fully described hereinafter and defined in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a drug box or receptacle constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on the line 0000, Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line y 1 Fig. 2.
In the said drawings the reference-numeral 1 designates a rectangular box of sheet metal or other suitable material provided with a glass front 2. Above this front there is a rectangular plate having its edges bent inwardly, forming flanges 3, for holding a label. The said box is divided by a vertical partition 4 into two compartments 5 and 6, the front one, 5, for holding roots or lumps and the rear one, 6, for holding said roots and lumps in a powdered form. At the upper end of said partition is a plate 7, to which are hinged two covers 8, provided with inwardly-extending flanges 9 to make a tight joint when closed. These covers are separate and independent from each other, and one is forthe front compartment and the other for the rear.
The means employed for hinging and supporting the covers 8 constitute a feature of importance in my improved construction.
Referring to Fig. 2, it will be noted that the top edge of the partition 4 is reinforced by a beading, comprising the horizontal strip 10- vand the depending sides 11, which are bent down over the edge of the partition 4. Upon this strip 10 is secured by solder or other means the plate 7, havingits edges '7 bent inwardly upon itself to form the hinges for the covers.
It will be obvious that the construction thus described affords a strong hinge-support for the covers 9 and gives the hinge-plate a substantial support upon the top of the partition.
In use drugs in the form of roots, lumps, or blocks are placed in the front compartment, while the same drugs in a powdered form are placed in the rear compartment. The solid drugs can thus be readily seen through the glass front.
The advantages of my invention will be apparent. Drugs in both a solid and powdered form may be kept in the same receptacle, .and it will only be necessary to look at the solid drugs to tell where the same drugs in a powdered form may be found.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- The combination with the receptacle havinga transparentfront, of a vertical partition dividing the receptacle into two independent compartments, a reinforcing-strip at the top edge of the partition comprising a horizontal strip, and depending vertical sides, a plate secured upon said reinforcing-strip and having its edges turned up to form hinges, and covers independently hinged to said plate.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE w. BOYD.
