DELIVAN WILLARD SCUTT, or WATKINS, NEW YORK.
BOWL OR BASIN FOR WATER-CLOSETS.
SPECIFICATION forming partof Letters Patent No. 625,125, dated May 16, 1899.
Application filed May 14, 1898. Serial No. 680,685. No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DELIVAN WILLARD SCUTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vatkins, in the county of Schuyler and State of New York, have'invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bowls or Basins for ater-Closets, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to basins for waterclosets; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which shall be entirely odorless; and with this and other objects in View the invention consists in the device hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specificatiomof which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a central vertical section of the preferred form of my improved basin for water-c1osets, and Fig. 2 a similar view showing a modified form of construction.
In the'drawings forming part of this specification the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in the practice of my invention I provide a basin or receptacle 5 of the usual form, which is incommunication, at the rear side thereof, with an escape-passage 6,with which an ordinary escapepipe may be connected, and the rear wall of this escape-passage is carried forwardly and downwardly to form a shield 7, the front of which terminates in the rear portion of the basin or bowl 5, as shown at 8.
The upper edge of the basin or bowl 5 iscircular in form and provided with an inwardly and downwardly curved rim or flange 9,whereby a circular space is formed, and a watersupply pipe 11 communicates with this circular space, and the water is discharged into the bowl or basin in the-usual manner.
The bowl or basin 5 is inclosed, at the opposite sides and the front and bottom thereof, by a casing 12, whereby a substantially annular space 13 is formed, which incl'oses the bowl or basin, with the exception of the back thereof, where the escape-passage 6 is formed, and the bottom wall of said casing is provided directly beneath the bowl or basin 5 with a downwardly-directed tubular extension 14, which is adapted to serve as a connection for an airsupply pipe, and in practice a pipe is connected therewith, which may be carried outside of the building or into the cellar and by means of which air is supplied to the cham ber 13. The casing 12 or'the front wall of the chamber 13 is also provided with perforations 16, through which air' may be admitted into said chamber, and the upper wall of said cas ing is provided with an inwardly and downwardly curved annular flange 17, which rests upon the upper rim of the bowl or basin. and which is perforated throughout its extent, as shown at 18.
The pipe 15 and the perforations 16 are adapted to supply fresh air to the chamber 13, and communicating with the annular space formed by the downwardlycurved flange 17 at the top of the casing 12 is apipe 20, which is in communication with a pipe 21,
which communicates with the upper portion of the escape-passage 6 and is also in communication with the bowl orbasin 5, and the pipes 20 and 21 serve as ventilating-pipes, and the pipe 21 is carried to an escape-flue or to the outsideof the building, as will be readily understood.
Theseat-plate 22 is provided with the usual central opening 23 and is hinged to a support 24' at 25, and hinged to said seat-plate at 28 is a cover 27, the lower side of which is provided with an annular packing-ring 28, of rubber or other suitable material, which is designed to make a closed connection between the cover 27 and the seat-plate 22, and said seatplate 22 isalso provided with an annular packing-ring 29, of rubber or suitable material, which is designed to make a close connection between said seat-plate and the upper annular surface of the casing 12. i
By means of this construction I provide means for thoroughly ventilating the bowl or basin and for carrying the odors therefrom out of the building, andin Fig. 2 I have shown a modification of this construction in which the casing 12 is omitted and an annular tubular crown 30 is placed around the top of the basin or bowl 5 and provided with an airpipe 31, which may take the air from the closet or which may be carried into the collar or outside of the building, and the inner side of the tubular crown-piece 30 is perforated at 18 in the same manner as shown in Fig. 1.
The seat-plate 22 and the cover27 are omitted in Fig. 2; but it will be understood that in practice these parts are provided the same as in Fig. 1, and the object of the downwardly and inwardly curved flange 9 of the bowl or basin 5 is to provide means to prevent the water from splashing out of said bowl or basin when admitted through the pipe 11, and it will thus be seen thatIaccomplish the object of my invention by means of a construction which is well adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended and which does not materially add to the cost of devices of this class.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. A bowl or basin for Water-closets provided with an escape-passage at the back thereof, an air-escape pipe communicating with the upper portion of said passage, and with said bowl or basin, said bowl or basin being also provided with a casing which incloses the bottom, sides and front thereof, whereby a chamber is formed between said bowl or basin and said casing, means for supplying air to said chamber, said casing being also provided at the top thereof with a circular downwardly and inwardly curved flange which extends to the top of the bowl or basin, and which is perforated, a pipe which forms a communication between the upper part of said chamber and said air-escape pipe, and a hinged seat-plate which rests on the top of said casing, and is provided with a hinged cover, substantially as shown and described.
2. A bowl or basin for water-closets provided with an escape-passage at the back thereof, an air-escape pipe communicating with the upper portion of said passage, and with said bowl or basin, said bowl or basin being also provided with a casing which incloses the bottom, sides and front thereof, whereby a chamber is formed between said bowl or basin and said casing, means for supplying air to said chamber, said casing being also provided at the top thereof with a circular downwardly and inwardly curved flange which extends to the top of the bowl or basin, and which is perforated, a pipe which forms a communication between the upper part of said chamber and said air-escape pipe, and a hinged seat-plate which rests on the top of said casing, and is provided with a hinged cover, said bowl or basin being provided at the top thereof with an inwardly and downwardly curved flange or rim, a casing which incloses the bottom, sides and front of said bowl or basin, and the top of which is curved downwardly and inwardly to form an annular space, the inner wall of which is perforated, an air-escape pipe communicating with said bowl or basin at the top thereof, a pipe communicating therewith and with said annular space, said basin being also provided with a hinged seat-plate the bottom of which is provided with a packing-ring which rests on the top of said casing, and said seat-plate being provided With a hinged cover the bottom of which is provided with an annular packing, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 11th day of May, 1898.
