The main purpose of this invention is to provide a purse or bag frame and its latch or eateh which shall be neat in appearance and shall be of a simple, strong, andrdurable construction, the parts being arranged with a viewof furnishing what may be termed a trick or uzzle7 frame which will offer` .abundantopportunities to exercise good j udgment in manipulating the parts lof the same and at the same time afford great amusement.

The invention therefore consists in the novel construction of vpurse orbag frame and its holding or locking catch, as well as in the novel arrangements and combinations of the parts thereof, all of whichwill be described in detail in the following specification and finally embodied in the clauses of the claim.

The inlay c is also provided with a shoulder ci and an upwardly-extending portion C10, whereby said portion when arranged in position in the frame-section ct forms, with the said section, a suitable chamber C. Said inlay is provided with suitablyformed openings c11 and cl2, and the inlay c is also provided with similar openings 013 and c, said openings when the two inlays are secured in position against the inner surfaces of the frame-sections being directly opposite each other, as will be clearly seen from an inspection of Figs. 7 and 10.

Secured in position upon the upper surface of the frame-section a is a suitably-constructed ornamental shell CZ, which is preferably made "l shape in cross-section, so as to form a channel-bar having the open ends CZ and d2, as clearly illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5. The sides of said chan nel-bar are provided with suitable tongues or lugs CZB, which are passed through slots CLG in the frame-section a and are bent over against the under side thereof to secure said bar CZ in acentral position on said frame-section; but of course it Will be evident that any other known fastening means may be employed for securing said bar in place upon the frame-section ct. Within said channel-bar CZ is loosely arranged a coiled springf, the ends of which are in operative contact with the ends of suitably-constructed push-pieces Zt and ZL', which are slidably arranged upon the upper surface of the framesection a and have their respective ends h2 and h3 extending into the respective open ends CZ and Z2 of said bar CZ and abutting against the ends of the spring f, as above stated. . preferably' made as indicated in Fig. 9, each piece comprising a metallic shell h4, in which I have secured in any desirable manner a block h5, provided with the offsets h6 and a post hl. The said post Zt' of the push-piece h is passed through a slot in the upper surface of the frame-section d and then fitted in a hole fi', formed in a slide fi, said slide being provided with a lip Z2, formed at a right angle thereto, or approximately so, andthe said post 71.7 being clenched on the inner side of said slide t', the said slide and said piece h thus being arranged on the inner and outer sides of the frame-section, as will be clearly evident from an inspection of Figs. 4 and 5. The other pushpiece h has its post h7 likewise passed through a slotin the upper surface of the fram e-seotion a and is then tted in a hole c', formed in the catch plate c. Said plate e is preferably curved, as at e2, and is provided with a springarm e3, bent, as at e4, to form a holding-tongue c5, substantially as illustrated. Said plate e is also provided with a pair of downwardlyextending anges ei and e?. The frame-section a is provided with an inwardly-projecting arm ax, which extends through the openings c1l and cl2A in the respective inlays c and c and into the chamber C, having a hook end a7, which can be forced in operative holding engagement with the edge e8 of the said holdingtongue e5 when the two frame-sections a and a are closed upon each other. It Will thus be evident that the construction and arrangement of the several parts, so far as described, will form a suitable lock construction for purse ory bag frames, `the-catch being released by pushing the piece Zz/ toward the springf and the parts being brought into theirholding relation by simply closing the frame-sections a. and a.

In addition to the above I have provided the frame sections with a peculiarlyarranged locking mechanism to prevent the catch-plate e being operated unless saidlocking mechanism is first properly manipulated.

As Will be seen from the several figures of the drawings, I have secu red in a central perforation in the side 0,3 of the frame-section a a pin or post as, on which I have pivota-lly arranged a lever 7c, (see more particularly Fig. 1,) said lever having its arm portions 7c' and k2 extending on opposite sides of this fulcrurnal support, substantially as illustrated. The said arm portion Zt" has secured thereto in any well-known manner a post k3, which extends through a slot or opening L13 in the side a3 of the frame-section d and normally is arranged beneath the ed ge i3 of the lip i2 of the slide t', as clearlyillustrated in Figs. 3, 4, and 8. The arm portion 7a2 is likewise provided with a post 7r4, which extends through a slot or opening a9 in the side of the frame-section a and normally is arranged directly in front of the edge e9 of the iian ge e7 of the catch-plate e to hold said plate in its immovable or locked position, as will be clearly evident from an inspection of Figs. 3 and 4. Against the opposite side of the bag orpurse frame I have pivotally arranged on a pin or post am, secured in a central perforation in the side a4 of the framesection a', a similarly-constructed lever Z, which is provided with arm portions Z and Z2, extending on opposite sides of this fulcrumal support d10. that side nearest the part d4 of the frame-scction a with a stud Z3, which is preferably made pointed, as indicated in Fig. 8, and can be made to slide over a serrated or corrugated surface 01,11 in the side-a4 of said frame-section. The other arm portion Z2 of said lever Z has'a post Z4, which extends through an opening 0.12 in the side a4 of the frame-section a and norm ally isarran ged directly in front of the edge 610 of the flange e6 of the catch-plate e, whereby the sliding movement of said plate e is prevented, although the lever vZe may have been previously operated and its post 7a4 disengaged.

Having described the arrangement and construction of the several parts of theoperat- 'ing mechanism, I will now endeavor-togive a brief description of operating the several parts in order to -release the catch-plate eto permit the pivotal separation of the framesections a and a.

The operation isas follows: I rst push the g piece h in the direction ofthe arrows l in'` Figs. 4 and 5 against the end of the springf, whereby the edge 3 of the lip 2 of the plate is moved away from the post 7c3 of the arm portion Zr'. While still holding said pushpiece h in its operated position, by means of another finger I apply pressure to the under edge of the arm portion 7s' of the lever 7a, whereby said post k3 is forced upwardly along the edge L of said lip 2, as indicated in Fig. 5, and said plate will be retained in its operative position. Thus it will be seen that the purpose of said plate in its initial position is to prevent the manipulation of the lever k, but permt'said lever to be actuated when said plate is pushed forward by means of the piece h. At the same time that the arm portion Zt moves in an upward direction the other arm portion 7a2 ofthe lever Zt will move downwardly and disengage the post 7a4 from contact with the edge e9 of the flange e7 of the catch-plate e. Pressure is now applied to the under side of the arm portion Z of the lever Z, said arm moving in an upward direction and causing the stud Z3 to pass from one serration a in the frame-section a' to the next serration, while the arm portion Z2 will move in a downward direction and will thereby remove the post Z1 away from its holding engagement with the edge elo of the lip e6 of the catch-plate e, as will beclearly evident. Said plate e now being free to slide, a push upon the push-piece h in the direction of the arrows 2 in Figs. 4 and 5 will force the holding-tongue c5 on said plate e away from the hook n.7 of the post ctx, connected with the `frame-section a', and the spring h will immediately actuate said frame-sections d and a and cause them to i'ly apart. Without any further manipulation of the levers Za and Z` levers 7c and Z in opposite directions on their fulcrumal supports to cause them to return to their normal or initial positions, (indicated in Figs. 1, 3, and 4,) when the'plate e and slide will once more vbe held in their normally immovable positions.

The many advantages of my novel construction of purse or bag frame and lockingcatch are evident from the above description, the construction of the several parts being simple, cheap, and neat, as well as operative, and at` the same time providing a toy or puzzle of" great utility, from which may be obtained great pleasure and amusement.

I am aware that changes may be made in the several arrangements and combinations ofthe various parts, as well as -in the details of the construction thereof, without departing from the scope of my present invention.

Ina bag or purse frame, the combination, with a pair of frame-sections, of a pair of push-pieces on one of said frame-sections, a pair of pivoted levers, one on the outer side of each frame-section, a catch-plate slidably arranged in one of said frame-Sections, Vand means connected with said levers, adapted to `release said catch-plate from its normally in operative position, substantially as and for the purposes set forth;

In a bag or purse frame, the combination, with a pair of frame-sections, of a pair of spring actuated push pieces slidably arranged on one of said frame-sections, a pair of pivoted levers, one on the outer side of each frame-section, a catch-plate slidably arranged in one of said frame-sections, and. means connected with said levers, adapted to release said catch-plate from its normally inoperative position, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

a spring-tongue e5, secured to one of said frame-sections, and a hook-shaped holding or locking arm on the other frame-section, arranged to engage said tongue e5 when the frame-sections are closed, and means connected with said plate c for operating the same and disengaging said tongue e5 and hookshaped arm, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

9.' In abagor purse frame, the combination, With a pair of frame-sections, of a catch-plate e having an arm c3, a bent portion e4, and a spring-tongue c5, secured to one of said framesections, and a hook-shaped holding or locking arm on the other frame-section, arranged to engage said tongue e5 when the frame-sections are closed, and means connected with said plate e for operating the same and disengaging said tongue c5 and'hook-shaped arm, consisting, of a spring-actuated slide on the outer side of one of said frame-sections, and a post h5 on said slide extending through an opening in said frame-section and secured to said plate e, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

In a bag or purse frame, the combination, with a pair of frame-sections a and a', of an inlay c in said section a, having a shoulder c6, an upwardly-extending portion c7, and formed with openings c11 and cl2, said inlay forming with the inner and upper portion of said framesection, a chamber C, an inlay c' in said frame-section a', provided with openings catch-plate, and the post on one of said levers extending into and through the openings c13 and on in the respective inlays, substantially as and Afor the purposes set forth.
