LOUIS OHRISTAIN JENSEN, OF BLOOMING PRAIRIE, MINNESOTA.
DOOR-CHECK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 624,941, dated May 16, 1899. Application led January 23, 1899. Serial No. 703.146. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, LoUIs OHRISTAIN J EN- SEN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Blooming Prairie, county of Steele, State of Minnesota, have'invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Checks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in door-checks.
The object of my invention is to provide a device of this character which is mounted entirely within the door, which will allow of the free movement of the door, which will hold the door in position when in operation, which can be readily placed into and out of operative position, and which is neat and attractive in appearance, durable in construction, simple and efficient in operation, and which can be manufactured and placed in position at a moderate cost.
To these and other endsl myinventionconsists in the improved construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, and particulary pointed out inthe appended claim..
In the drawings, in which similar numerals of reference indicate similar parts in all of the views, Figure 1 is an elevation, partly in section, of a door provided with my improved check. Fig. 2 is an edge elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view. Fig. 4 is a detail of the knob.
1 designates a door having its front edge provided with a groove or recess 2, extending from the bottom upward to a point in juxtaposition to the lock on the door, the opening in the edge of the door being closed by a plate 43, as shown. The bottom of the door is provided with a laterally-extending groove or recess 5, forming a continuation of the recess 2, while an opening 6 leads from the recess 5 upwardly, parallel with the recess 2, to a suitable point. The recess 5 isopen at the bottom and is adapted to receive the head 7 of a sliding bolt S, the lower face 'of the head 7 being provided with a cushion of suitable material, such as rubber, dac.
The shank 10 of the bolt 8 is adapted to eX- tend upwardly within the opening 6, a spring 11, located in said opening, serving to automatically move said bolt to its lower position 5 5 at all times.
12 designates a recessed opening opera tively connected to the recess 2, within which is mounted a shaft 13, having a drum 14,l said shaftbeing mounted in plates 15, mounted on opposite sidesv of the opening 12. The shaft y13 extends outwardly through said plates and has one of its ends provided with a knob 16, removably secured to the shaft 13.
The knob 16 is provided with a projecting lug 17 on itsrear face, which said lug is adapted to pass into an opening 18, formed in. the plate 15, secured in rear of the knob 16. A cord 19 is secured to the drum 14 and to the bolt 8 in the manner shown in Fig. 1.
The operation of the device is exceedinglyV simple, consisting of rotating the knob 16 to wind up the cord 19 on the drum 14, the lug 17 entering the opening 18 when the desired height is reached. This causes the bolt 8 to be drawn into the recess 5 and opening 6,
raising it out of contact with the floor. Wh en the door is to be held in position at any point, the knob is drawn outwardly until the lug 17 is free from the opening 18, whereupon the spring 11, serving to force the bolt downward into contact with the door, holds it in that position until the knob is again rotated.
The advantages of this construction are obvious, including the simplicity and efficiency in operation, durability of construction, the minimum number of parts, the inclosing of all of the operating parts within the door, and the low cost of manufacture.
I-Iaving thusdescribed my invention, what 9o Iclaim as new is- The combination with a door, having a vertical channel or groove and a laterally-extending recess, and also having a vertical opening 3 of a sliding bolt mounted to have' vertical movementin said opening; a spring for automatically moving said bolt downward; a
