BICYCLE-SUPPORT.

To all whom it may concern: I Be it known that I, JOHN F. l/VILLIAMS, citizen of the United States, residing at Sandusky, in the county of Erie and State of Ohio,
have invented certain new and useful Improvemen ts in Bicycle-Supports, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention has reference to an improved folding support for bicycles adapted to be attached to and carried by the bicycle-frame for the purpose of holding the bicycle in an upright position when not in use.
The object of my invention is to provide a rigid and effective support of the type referred to of such simple construction as will permit of its being manufactured at a small cost.
Another object of the invention is to construct the support in such manner that it may be quickly folded intoa compact bodyof minimum size, which in'turn may be automatically clamped to the frame of the machine when the latter is in use.
\Vith these objects in view my invention consists of an improved bicycle-support, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and in the peculiar construction, arrangement, and combination of its various parts, as will be more particularly pointed outin the claims and shown in the drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of a bicycle with my improved supportfolded and attached thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detached perspective view of a portion of the folded support; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the supporting device, showing the same in operative position with relation to the bicycle, the latter being partly illustrated in perspective in dotted lines.
The numeral 2, Fig. 1, designates a bicycle of any ordinary construction, and 3 represents the support, which is clamped to the lower inclined tubular member 4 of the bicycle-frame.
The supporting device at one end has a hinged connection with a crank-hanger, as plainly shown in Fig. 3, said connection being formed through the agency of collars 5 5,
secured to the crank-hanger, and the pin 6,
which pivotally connects the support to the collars. V
In construction the supporting device comprises a longitudinal body member 7, hinged, as described, at one end to the bicycle-frame, and carries at the other end, pivotally connected therewith, a movable arm 8. In proximity to the pivotal point of connection between the body and arm members is arranged an upright support 9. The arm member is pivoted, preferably at its center, to the body member and is provided at one end witha spring-clip 10, the function of which will be hereinafter set forth. The other end of the arm member is bifurcated, as shown, to receive a slide 11. The free end of the slideis provided with a hook 12, which in turn is provided at its extremity andupon its inner face with a spring-catch 13. A cross-piece 14 isemployed to hold the slide within'the bifurcated end. The longitudinal body member 7 is provided at one side and near its outer end with a slot 17 and with an offset 18.. In this slot a pin 19 is adapted to travel and to be retained therein in any approved manner. A
second pin is fixedly secured upon the crosspiece 14, and a link 20 connects the pins.
When the support is to be folded and carried attached to the frame, the transverse arm member 8 is moved into alinement with the body member, as shown in Fig. 2, and the latter is then raised until it arrives in proximity to the tubular member 4. The springclip 10 is then engaged over the tubular member, and while clamping the supporting device to the bicycle-frame likewise retains the arm member of the support in alinement with the body thereof.
When the device is in use, the movable arm member is at right angles to the body, and'is retained in such position by means of the pin 19 being forced into the offset 18, as plainly shown in Fig. 3., At the end of the body the upright Wheel-supporting member 9 is located, said member being hinged to the body and having its free end bifurcated to receive and hold at some distance from the ground the front Wheel of the bicycle. To-
permit the member 9 to be folded down upon the arm member when the latter is in alinement with the body, the link 11 is bent into the form of a rectangleyas shown, so that the greatest portion of the link will be entirely at one side of the support 9.
' The numeral 21 designates a spring-clamp ondly, constituting a securing device adapted I to engage over the tubular member 4: of the bicycle-frame when the support 9 is folded downwardly upon the arm member.
As a further means-for clamping the bicyole-support to the frame the slide 11. which constitutes an extensible hook-shaped end for the arm, is drawn forwardly when the parts are folded a snfficient distance to permit of its engagement with the head of the frame. The spring-catch l3 retains the hook in position after the engagement is made, preventing lateral movement of the end. The ball race 22,agai nst which the hook bears,preven ts the parts from falling. It will be readily observed from the construction of the support as thus set forth that various modifications can be made Without departing materially from the spirit of my invention, which consists, essentially, in a folding support comprising a longitudinal body member attachable at one end to the bicycle-frame, a transverse arm member carried at the other end of the body, adapted to be arranged substantially at right angles to the body member when the device is in use, and means for retaining the folding support to the'frame when the Wheel is in use.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
-1. In a folding bicycle-support, the combination with a longitudinal body member, at-
tachable at one end to the bicycle-frame, of a movable arm member attached to the other end of the body, capable of movementin alinement with,or at an angle to the body member, means for stopping the travel of the arm member after the required angular position is attained, a Wheel-supporting member, and a securing device upon one or more of the several members for holding the parts to the frame.
2. In a folding bicycle-support, the combination with a longitudinal body member, attachable at one end to the bicycle-frame, of a movable arm member attached to the other end of the body, capable of movement in alinement with or at an an gle to the body member, means for holding the arm member in alinem ent with the body, a locking device adapted to retain the arm in the required angular position, a wheel-supporting member, and a securing device upon one or more of the several members for clamping the parts to the frame.
3. In a folding bicycle-support, the combination With a longitudinal body member, attachable at one end to the bicycle-frame, of a movable arm member attached to the other end of the body, capable of movementin alinement with or at an angle to the body member, means for stopping the travel of the arm member after the required angular position is attained, an upright wheel-supporting member hinged to the body, and a spring-clamp attached to the upright, substantially as described.
4. Ina folding bicycle-support, the combination with a longitudinal body member, at-
tachable at one end to the bicycle-frame, of a v movable arm member attached to the other end of thebody, capable of movement in alinement with, or at an angle to the body member, means for stopping the travel of the body member after the required angular position is attained, an extensible clamping device carried by the arm member at one end thereof, and an upright wheel-supporting member attached to the body, substantially as described.
5. In a folding bicycle-support, the combination with a longitudinal body member, attachable at one end to the bicycle-frame, of a movable arm member attached to the other end of the body member, capable of movement in alinement with, or at an angle to the body member, means for stopping the travel of the arm member after its desired angular position is attained, a slide arranged in one of the ends of the arm member, a hook carried by the slide, a spring-catch upon the hook, and a wheel-supporting member attached to the longitudinal body, substantially as described.
