UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
.IAMEs E. sEIDEL, or READING, PENNSYLVANIA.
WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 624,551, dated May 9,1899.
Application filed .Time 23,1898. Serial No. 684,226. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES F. SEIDEL, a citi- Zen of the United States of America, and a resident of Reading, county of Berks, State of Pennsylvania, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Vashiug-Machines, of which the following is aspeciiication.
- My invention relates to that class of washing-machines in which a reciprocating motion of the operating-lever is arranged to impart an oscillating motion to a pivotally-mounted beater; and it consists in the improved construction and arrangement of these parts in connection with the tub and cover, which are fully described in connection with the following drawing, and the novel features of which are, specifically set out in the claims.
The drawing shows a cross-sectional elevation of a machine embodyimg my invention, the cover being represented as closed, with the beater in central position in the tub, the oscillating motion of the beater and the position of the hinged cover when the beater is raised out of the tub being indicated in dotted lines.
The tub 1 is of ordinary semicylindrical form of any convenient length, supported upon legs 4E and having the curved bottom 2, providedwith suitable ribs 3, extending between the ends 5. The sides of the tub are carried above the center 14 of the curved bottom, and a cover or lid 10 is hinged at 12 to one of the overhanging ledges 9 and has its free edge resting upon the opposite ledge when closed, as shown.
To the under side of the cover 10, within the ends 5 of the tub, are fastened depending brackets 13, which form at 14 pivotal bearings for an oscillating beater, the two wings 15 and 15 of which are arranged approximately at right angles to each other and lie on opposite sides of a central longitudinal partition 6 in the tub. This partition as well as the wings 15 of the beater are preferably ribbed or grooved longitudinally and provided with perforations or openings 7 and 17, respectively, as shown, so as to furnish a suitable beating-surface and permit of easy circulation of the liquid.
The Vlever 18 for oscillating the pivoted beater is provided with diverging metallic arms 19 and 20, which pass loosely through separate openingsll and 1l in the cover 10 and have their lower ends rigidly attached to the two wings 15 and 15, respectively. These arms form arcs of a circle struck from the center of oscillation-14, and the openings 11 are of a shape corresponding with the cross-section of the arms, so that the latter will in any position`of the beater practically close them.
In fillingthe tub the cover 10 is swung up# ward into the position indicated by dotted lines, carrying with it the pivoted beater and the operating lever for the latter. When lowered for service, the cover entirely closes up the filled tub, thus eectively retaining the steam, &c.,without in the least interfering with the operation of oscillating the beater, the cleansing action of which upon the clothes will be readily understood.
Hav-ing thus fully described my invention,
I do not desire to limit myself to the exact construction shown; but
What I claim is- 1., The combination with the tub of a cover therefor, a beater pivotally carried by said cover, and a lever for oscillating said beater attached thereto by means of curved arms having their center at the center of oscillation and passing through separate openings in the cover, substantially as described.
2. The combination with the tub having a central longitudinal perforated partition, `and a hinged cover, of a two-winged beater pivotally mounted in brackets depending'from said cover above said partition, and an oscillating lever therefor having curved arms attached to said wings on opposite sides of said pivot and working through separate openings in the cover substantially as described..
Signed by me at Reading, Pennsylvania, this 20th day of June, 1898.
JAMES F. SEIDEL.
