SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 613,901, dated November 8, 1898.
Application filed April 18, 1898. Serial No. 677,912- (No model-l '1'0 a whom it may concern.-
Be itknown that I, FRANCIS GINNAsI, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Acetylene-Gas Gem erators, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part thereof, in which In the accompanying drawing the figure is.

In applying my invention employ a gasometer a, of the usual type, embodying the outer cylinder a,preferably mounted on legs a" and being open at the top, and an inner cylinder a closed at the top and open at the bottom and adapted to telescope within the outer cylinder. Stand-pipes b b, fixed in suitable apertures in the base of the outer cylinder, are adapted to convey gas to and from, respectively, the interior of the gasometer. The escape of gas is prevented by a body of water contained within the outer cylinder in the usual manner.
Fixed to the top of the interior cylinder are the blocks a a which support the arm a, projecting beyond the outer wall of the gasometer.
A receptacle 0, adapted to contain the carbid of calcium or other analogous gas-producing material, is placed, preferably, in close proximity to the gasometer and has an open mouth adapted to be closed by means of the gas-tight stopper 0, which is retained in position by frictional contact with the interior of the neck of the receptacle until a dangerous pressure is generated within the receptacle, when it' will be blown out.
Into an aperture 0' of the stopper a flexible tube B is tightly fitted, and the free end of this tube is connected with the stand-pipe Z) in any approved manner.
Stop-cocks b b are fitted to the stand-pipes b b, respectively, preferably close to the sides of the gasometer, outside the elbows.
A central .hole 0" in the stopper 0 is adapted to receive the nozzle 01 of a flexible water-res ervoir D. This nozzle is provided with the stop-cock 01, adapted to regulate the size of the aperture communicating between the water-reservoir and the carbid-receptacle. Obviously the flow of Water may be cut ofi entirely, if desired.
The upper portion of the water-reservoir is adapted for intermittent contact with the arm a carried by the gasometer.
In operation the carbid of calcium is placed in the receptacle 0, the stopper carrying the tube B placed in position, "and the water reservoir filled and its nozzle inserted in the hole The stop-cock d is adjusted so that when there is no pressure upon the water-reservoir no water drops into the carbid-chamber; but as soon as the arm 0. contacts with the reservoir drops of water are forced through the nozzle into the carbid-receptacle, where it frees the gas, which passes through the tube B and stand-pipe b into the gasometer. The inner cylinder then rises, carrying with it the arm a and relieving the pressure on the water-reservoir. Generation of gas ceases. As soon, however, as the stop-cock b is opened and the gas passes out from the gasometer to the burner the cylinder a falls by gravity and the arm a again comes in contact with the water-reservoir D and gas generation again commences. This action will be continued automatically until the supply of water or carbid of calcium is exhausted.
Having thus described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An automatic gas-generator, embodying a receptacle for the gas-producing material, a flexible water-reservoir mounted thereon, a gasometer, and means actuated by the gasometer for automatically regulating the production of gas, substantially as shown and described.
2. In an automatic gas-generator, the combination of a receptacle for the gas-producing a stopper therefor, a valve-controlled flexible water-reservoir mounted thereon, a gasometer, an arm mounted thereon and adapted for intermittent contact with the water-reservoir and a flexible pipe communicating between said receptacle and said gasometer, substantially as shown and described.
