Be it known that I, DENISON L. HOWARD, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improvement in iper-Rod-Holding Attachments for Guns; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.

My invention relates to an attachment for guns which is especially designed for holding a wiper-rod.

It consists, essentially, of one or more spring-clamps adapted to clasp the gun barrel or magazine and having convexly-curved wings so attached as to form channels to hold the wiper-rod.

It also consists in details of construction which will be more fully explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an end view of a rifle-barrel, showing my attachment. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the same. Figs. 3 and at show my device attached to double-barrel shotguns.

In magazine-guns, especially of the class known as the VVinchest-er rifle, in which the magazine extends along the lower side of the barrel, there is no convenient arrangement for carrying a wiping-rod, and itis often necessary to use such a rod in connect-ion with the gun.

My invention is designed to provide a convenient removable attachment for guns of this class which will make a suitable clasp and support for the wiping-rod.

A is the barrel of the rifle, (here shown as octagonal in shape,) and B is a magazine which is cylindrical in shape and is fixed in line directly below the barrel of the gun.

The fore-end C, so called, of the gun is made of wood and extends along the barrel nearly half-way toward the end, the magazine projecting and continuing on to the end of the barrel. This leaves no place for the cylindrical collars which are often fixed beneath an ordinary rifle to hold a wipingstick. I therefore make a holder of elastic metal, as shown at a. The curvature of the body of this piece of metal is such that it will extend a little more than half-way around the lower part of the magazine, thus inclosing it sufliciently to insure this portion of the clasp adhering to the magazine. From the upper end of this curved portion the convexcurved wings a spring outwardly, the upper ends curving inwardly to a point approxi mately close to the two angles of the octagonal bar, which form the lower edge of the vertical sides of the barrel.

The two lower inclined sides of the barrel and the curvature of the top of the magazine form depressions upon each side of the gun over which the wings a are curved, thus forming channels or spaces b of sufficient size to receive a section of the wiping-stick in each.

I have found that a single one of the clasps a is sufficient to hold the sections of the wiping-sticlgwhich are only about half the length of the barrel, and these two sections can be retained in the channels 12 upon each side, the inner end abutting in front of the fore-end C.

If desired, two of the clasps or holders may be employed-one near the outer end of the barrel and the other close to the fore-end.

The wiping-stick is made of wood or metal in two parts, one part havingascrew-threaded metal socket and the other a correspondingly screw-threaded end to fit into the socket, so that the two together make a continuous rod. These sections D of the rod may be made with depressions, as shown at d, which will fit over the band E near the outer end of the magazine and by which the latter is held in place with relation to the barrel of the gun. These notches d, fitting over the band,will hold the wiping-stick sections in place and prevent their dropping out in case they do not fit tight within the clasps a If desired, the clasps can be removed at any time by simply springing them open enough to disengage them from the magazine.

This device may also be used in conjunction with double -barreled breech loading guns. In this construction the ends of the clasp encircle the lower part of the gun-barrels, and the sockets for the wiping-rod sec tions are formed opposite the depressions be tween the barrels.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination with a magazine-rifle of a wiping-rod holder, consisting of an elas tic clasp adapted to partially surround the magazine, having convex wings curving outwardly therefrom to form an open channel or space between themselves and the interior angles formed by the meeting of the magazine and the barrel.

2. The combination with a magazine-rifle, of a device for retaining a wiping-rod, consisting of one or more elastic plates curved to inclose more than half the circumference of the magazine, outwardly-curving convex wings extending upwardly from the clasp having the upper ends approaching the sides of the barrel so as to form channels between the wings and the interior meeting angles of the barrel and magazine, for the reception of the the rods adapted to engage the bands which hold the magazine whereby the rods are prevented from being withdrawn.

3. A wiping-stick-holding attachment for guns consisting of an elastic removable clasp, fitting the barrels or magazine and having the curved holding-sockets substantially as described.
