Nu. 6l3,505. Patented Nov. I, I898.
H. L. FERB'IS.
SLED.
(Application filed July 5, 1898.)
(No Model.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY L. FERRIS, OF HARVARD, ILLINOIS.
SLED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 613,505, dated November 1, 1898.
I Application filed. July 5,1898. 7 Serial No. 685,084 (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be itknown that I, HENRY L. FERRIS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Harvard, in the county of McHenry and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sleds, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in sleds, the object of which is to make a strong durable sled of good appearance and at a price satisfactory to the trade.
To such end the invention consists in certain features of construction hereinafter fully described and claimed.
The drawings illustrate the invention by means of two figures, of which- Figure 1 is a perspective of a complete sled, and Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section in plane 2 2 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, A represents a top board, and B B two cleats of ordinary construction. Upon the ends of the cleats are two side rails C G, preferably in the form of flat metal strips bolted or otherwise secured to the cleats and extending forward-from the front cleat. Beneath each cleat are secured a pair of U-shaped braces D D, preferably diver ging from the point of attachment to the 01 eat downwardly, the inner more obliquely than the outer, and meeting at their lower extremities d d, where they are curved toward each other and rest in the upper concave sides of the runners E E, which are formed of a strip of sheet metal rolled'or otherwise bent into concavo-convex cross-section with the con-' cave side upward. The lower ends of the braces D D are secured to the runners preferably by means of rivets d 01 These two braces form the knees of the sled, and it should be noticed that because of the main o ner in which their lower ends are bent and abut against each other all of the shearing strain is taken from the rivets, one brace op placement of the knees upon the runners by the friction of the latter in the running of the sled. The runners are turned up at their front end, as is customary, and are secured to the side rails G C by means of castings F F, having eyes f f to receive a rope or other hauling device.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Let'- ters Patent 1. In a sled, the combination with suitable framework and concavo-convex runners up wardly concave,"of a series of knees each com= posed of apair of braces extending downward into the concave upper side of the runner and abutting against'each other therein; substantially as described.
2. In a sled, the combination with a suitable top and upwardly-concave runners, of the U-shaped downwardly-diverging braces, D, D, secured at their lower ends in the concave upper sides of the runners and abutting each other at said lower ends; substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand, at Harvard, in the county of McHenry and State of Illinois, this 27th day of June, A. D. 1898.
HENRY L. FERRIS.
