SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 612,563, dated October 18, 1898.

Be it known that I, ToNY Ferran, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in

the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Temporary Binders, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in the class of devices for temporarily binding loose sheets in which the binder comprises a back having iiexibly connected with it covers between which are held the sheets bound by filing them on pins and clamping them together between bindingsticks.

My present invention is in the nature of an improvement upon the binder for which Letters Patent of. the United States No. 557 ,7 S8 were granted to me on the 7 th day of April, 1896, and is especially designed for use with the so-called loose-leaf-ledger system of bookkeeping, though it is equally suitable, like my aforesaid former device, for tempora- V rily binding loose papers, maps, and the like generally.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of myimproved binder, showing it in open condition; Fig. 2, a section taken at the line 2 on Fig. l and viewed in the direction of the arrow; Fig. 3, a broken view, in side elevation, with the the sheets removed and illustrating the operation of a clamp-nut on a binding-pin; and Fig. Il, abroken section taken at the line 4 on Fig. 2 and viewed in the direction of the arrow. i

A is the case of the binder, which I prefer to form entirely of wood. It comprises the back A', having hinged to its opposite edges the covers A2 and A3, the back, as shown, being formed of the two sections r and r.

For the sake of durability these clips are hinged to the upper ends of metal bars q, countersunk and securely :fastened in the face of the section r" to en-v tend transversely across it, and from the lower end of each bar there projects forward a rigid foot o, shaped like the clips and from which a iilingpin extends upward. The two outer filing-pins B and B are threaded, and the intermediate filing-pin is plain or smooth, all for a purpose hereinafter described, and all should be of the same diameter. For fastening the clips to the pins the latter may be tapped in their upper end portions to receive headed screws n, passed into them through openings in the hinged clips.

C and D are clampingsticks loose in the binder (though the stick D might be station- `ar-y or attached to the back A) and having holes provided at corresponding intervals to adapt them to be passed over the bindingn pins, which should iit the holes snugly, and on the threaded pins B and B are nuts m m for tightening the clamping-sticks against the leaves or sheets E to be bound held between them. From the clamping-sticks respectively extend the inside covers C/ and D', which are iiexibly connected with or hinged to the sticks and may be formed of pasteboard. rlhey should be of dimensions to cover and protect the bound sheets, and either may be used when opened or folded over as a backing to facilitate writing ou the reverse side of any bound sheet. v

To bind sheetsE, (which may bel provided with holes near one edge at intervals and of dimensions corresponding with those of the binding-pins,) they are slipped at their holes upon the bindingpins against the under clamping stick D after withdrawing the screws n, turning back thehinged clips,scrow ing off the nuts m, and withdrawing the bind` ing-stick C, with its attached cover C. lVhcn the sheets to be bound have been thus adjusted, the clamping-stick C is replaced and the nuts m are screwed down against it upon the outer binding-pins to grip the sheets between the two binding-sticks, when the clips are turned on their hinges against the pins and fastened thereto by inserting the screws n.

The hinged clips take the place of the con tinuous shield-stick of my aforesaid formerly patented device, which renders somewhat inh convenientacccss to the nuts when high up on the binding-pins for manipulating them, while the clips do not in any way obstruct such access.

By leaving the intermediate binding-pin plain and of a diameter to cause the filingholes in the sheets to lit it snugly the sheets TOO it regularly one upon the other to coincide throughout in iling them and are not liable to get out of such regular order in manipulating the binder to Withdraw or insert sheets, While if each of the binding-pins Were threaded the consequent depressions in and projections upon them, by letting in some sheets and holding ont others at the edges of the perforations in thein, Would tend to disorganize the sheets by preventing maintenance of their desired coincidence at the edges.

By providing the sheets E with tiling-holes which open at the binding edges of the sheets, such as the angular holes Z, (shown in Fig. 4,) which present the preferred form, on loosening the nuts m sheets may readily be inserted into or Withdrawn from any place Without to that end requiring other sheets to be taken off the binding-pins.

Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is l. In a temporary binder, the combination of transverse bars at intervals on the inner from the opposite ends of said bars, threaded binding-pins extending from said feet to be engaged at their free ends by said clips and provided at said ends With internally-threaded openings, and headed screws passing through said clips into said openings, substantially as described. v

2. A temporary binder comprising, in com bination, a case A having a stii back A provided at intervals on its inner side with transverse bars, perforated hinged clips and rigid feet extending, respectively, from the opposite ends of said bars, plain and threaded binding-pins extending from said feet to be engaged at their free ends by said clips and tapped in said ends, clamping-sticks on said pins, nuts on said threaded pins, headed screws passing through said clips into the tapped ends of the pins, and covers flexibly connected With the binding-sticks, substantially as described.
