WILLIAM W. HENDRIGKS, or PHILADELPHIA, PENIvsrLvAIvIn,v Ass-Ionen- 'FO-THE OOPER' FIRErARMS MNFACTORY, `OF ISAME PLACE. y i v meeuwenafa 61,193, ma January 15,1867.
. I n IMPRovIID SKATE.
.TO ALL WHOM IT MY CONCERN:
Be it known that'LWILLI'AM W...HENDRICKS, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; have invented an Improvement' in Skates land I do hereby declare the following to be. a.' full? clear, and exact description of the same,- reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the'letters of reference marked thereon. v
My invention consists of certain devices, fully' described hereafter,.wherehy a skate can he readily and rml'y secured to its place,l and as readily detached therefrom.
IIn order to enable others to make and applymy invention, I will now proceed -'to describe its constructio'm and operation. On reference tothe accompanying. drawing` which forms afpartof this.s peciication- Figure 1 is a side view of my improved skate. f
Figure Zan inverted plan view; and
Figure 3 a modification of part of my invention.' i' l A is a pla-te, on which the sole of the bo'ot or shoe has to bear', and to this plate is secured the runner B. To the under side of the vplate, at the point a,' are hinged two levers, D and D', each of' which has a lug, d,
projectingabove the upper surface ofthe plate, and so arranged that the edges of' the sole' of'the hootorslme will he-grasped at or near its -hroadest point hy and between the 'said lugs on drawing the outer ends of the levers toward each other. Twolevers, E and E@ arefalso hinged to the under side of the plate A at the point b, eachof these levers having a lug, so arranged that the two lugs will ygrasp the heel of the boot or shoe, on drawing the outer ends of lthe levers together. s shown in figs. 1 and 2, the movement of the. four levers-is eiected simultaueouslyhy two straps, F and F', each being so forked that one strap shall'be. connected to eyes in the twolevers-D and E, and the other to the two levers D land E. The-two straps are passedover the foot, `as shown in the drawing, and secured together by the usual buckle, so that o n drawing the end of one strap tightly through the buckle of' the'other, the whole of the levers will b'eoperated simultaneously, and the sole and heel Afirmly grasped by and between the several lugs d d and e e, which are serrated or roughened on the t; inside to insure a drm hold. As heel fastening's, a multiplicity of 4 straps,.and other complex adjuncts to ordinary skates are dispensed with, it will he evident thatmy improved skate possesses the' advantages of greater simplicity and more ready means of adjustment to thehoot or shoe than those of ordinary construction; at the same time l the forceapplied to secure theskate is exerted through such a` leverage that but little exertion is required to insure a most rigid attachment.
Ivclaim as my invention, and desire-toisecure by Letters-Patente- The combination and arrangementof the plate A, the lever jaws D D E and E', with their lugs d e; and the straps F and E', or equivalent devices for operating the said levers beneath'the plate A, the whole being constructed and operating as and for the'purpose described.
i' In testimony whereof T have signed my name to this specification yin the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
'WM'. W. HENDRICKS.
