NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NOBLE B. LESLIE, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO ROSETTA M. AYLWORTH, OF SOUTH I IAVEN,MICHIGAN.
FENCE- STAY AN D FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 611,639, dated October 4, 1898- A lication fil d January 15, 1898. Serial No. 666,773- (N'o model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NOBLE B. LESLIE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Stays and Fasteners,
of which I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in fence-stays and fasteners; and the objects of the invention are to provide a finished stay ready for the attachment of the line-wires and to provide the same with independent metallic fasteners, which can be attached either by hand or machinery at pleasure.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, is further described in the accompanying specification, and specifically delineated in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view of a portion of fence, showing the method of attaching the line'wires. Fig. 2 is a detached fastener, and Fig. 3 shows the form of the fastener before being attached to the stay.
In the views, 1 is the stay-Wire; 2, the linewires 3, the body of the fastener, which is shown in Fig. 3 bent for attachment. The
body is bent twice at right angles at 4, at points a slight distance apart, and pierced at 5 through the transverse portions to receive the stay-wire, which passes through them. When threaded upon the wire and placed in the proper position thereon to receive the line-wires, the middle portion is crimped with the wire at 3 and 6,which effectually prevents its removal from the wire.
When mounting the line -wires, the upwardly-extending portion 7 is employed to hold them in place, between which and the stay-wire the line-wire is dropped. The upper extremity, slotted at 8, is then bent down over the line-wire, and thus the joint is completed.
I believe myself to be the first to complete a fence-stay and secure the line-wire thereto in this manner.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a fence-stay, the combination with the crimped wire, of metallic fasteners secured thereon at suitable intervals and provided with extended slotted portions whereby the line-wires are secured thereto, substantially as set forth.
2. In a fence-stay, the combination with a wire crimped at predetermined intervals, of a metallic stay bent twice at right angles and pierced for the introduction of the wire, and provided with an extended upper portion slotted as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A fastener for a wire crossing consisting of the combination with a body portion bent twice at right angles and pierced for the insertion of one wire in both transverse portions, of an extended upper portion provided with a vertical slot, substantially as set forth.
NOBLE B. LESLIE.
