BRAKE-HANDLE FOR CARS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 61 1,058, dated September 20, 1898.

To a. whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD O. COLLINS, of Taunton, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brake-Handles for Cars, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
My invention relates to brake-handles for cars; and it consists in certain novel features of construction, arrangement, and combination of parts,whi'ch will be readily understood by reference to the description of the accompanying drawings, and to the claims hereto appended, and in which my invention is clearly pointed out.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a plan of a brake-handle embodying my invention with the pawl engaging the ratchet in condition to rotate the brake-shaft. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an end elevation looking toward the left of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a section on line 00 or on Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a partial plan showing the two parts of the handle in a position relative to each other to permit the pawl to be retracted from engagement with the ratchet-teeth on the brake fitted to the upper end of the shaft A, so as to be revoluble thereon, and is preventedfrom being lifted therefrom by the set-screw (1 set therein and engaging the annular groove e, formed in said shaft, as shown in Figs. 2 and 6. The part B is provided with the stopshoulders f and f and the ears g and g, and has formed therein a rectangular mortise 9 extending from the shoulder f toward the axis of the shaft A, in which is fitted, so" as to be movable endwise therein, the pawl plate h, arranged to engage byits inner end the ratchet-teeth b, and when so engaged its outer end is flush'with the face of the shoulder f, as shown in Fig. 4. The part B of said handle is provided with the car i and the shouldersj and j, as shown in Fig. 4. The fulcrum-pin 0 extends through the ear 1' of the part B of the'handle only partway through motorman or brakeman moves the handle B B in the direction indicated by the arrow on Fig. l, the first enect of which is to move the part B about the pin 0 until the shoulders f and j come in contact, said shoulders having previously been separated, as indicated in Fig. 5, which first movement causes the pawl h to engage one of the teeth 6 of the ratchet on the upper end of the shaft A, and a continuation of the movement of the handle will cause a movement of said shaft about its axis in the same direction sufficient to apply the brake to the wheel. When it is desired to remove the brake from contact with the wheel, the operator moves the part B of the handle about the pin 0 until the shoulders f and 7" come in contact with each other, then moves both parts of the handle in the direction until the inner end of the pawl his moved about the shaft A a distance equal to the distance between the teeth I) on said shaft, which movement will cause the said pawl to be moved outward and disengaged from the ratchetteeth when the operator disengages the locking-pawl on the floor of the car-platform from its ratchet, when the strain of the brake-chain will rotate the shaft A, and the tension on the brake will be released.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. A brake-handle made in two parts connected together by a vertical hinge-pin, and each part provided with two stop-shoulders constructed and'arranged to permitbnly a limited movement of one of said parts about said hinge-pin, and a pawl, 'to engage said ratchet, carried by the hub -section of said handle, and acted upon by the other section of said handle to cause said engagement.
2. A brake-handle made in two parts connected together by a stop hinge-joint, the axis of the hinge-pin of which is vertical, said stopjoint being constructed and arranged to permit only a limited movement of one of said parts about said hinge-pin in either direction; in combination with a brake-shaft provided at its upper end with a series of ratchet-teeth and fitted to and revoluble in a bearing in the hub portion of said handle; and a pawl-plate fitted to and movable endwise in a bearing in said hub portion of said handle in position to be acted upon by the stop-shoulder of the other portion of said handle, at its outer end, and to engage said ratchet-teeth by its inner end.
3. The combination of the brake-shaft A provided with the ratchet-teeth l) and annular groove 6; a brake-handle composed of the two parts B and B connected together by the vertical hinge-pin c and said parts being provided with the stop-shouldersj j and f f respectively, and the part B with the oblique mortise g the pawl-plate h; the set-screw (Z engaging the groove 6; and the screw-plug 0 all constructed arranged and operating substantially as described.
4:. In combination with a brake-shaft provided with a series of ratchet-teeth upon its upper end; a brake-handle made in two parts connected together by a stop hinge-joint and mounted loosely upon the upper end of said shaft; and a sliding pawl fitted to and movable endwise in a bearing in the hub portion of said handle in position to be moved into engagement with said ratchet-teeth by the movement of the outer portion of said handle about its hinge-pin in one direction, and to be disengaged from said teeth by the action of a tooth upon its inner end when the handle is moved in the opposite direction.
