RUNNING-GEAR FOR WAGONS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of lLetters Patent No. 610,979, dated September 20, 1898.

Be it known that I, DAVID I-I. TURNBULL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Florence, in the county of Lauderdale and State of Alabama, have invented a new and useful Running-Gear for Vagons, of which the following is a specication.
The invention relates to improvements in running-gear for wagons.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of running-gear and to increase the strength, durability, and efficiency of the devices for supporting and guiding the bolster or sand-board and lessen the cost of constructing such devices.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a portion of a running-gear provided with my improvements. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken transversely of the bolster. Fig. 3 is a similar view taken longitudinally of the bolster.

l designates a substantially rectangular bracket mounted above an axle 2 and forming a guide for a bolster 3 and consisting of a horizontal bottom portion Il and vertical parallel sides 5. rlhe bracket l, which is secured to the running-gear 6, may be fastened directly to the axle 2, and although the device is shown applied to the rear portion of a runnin g-gear for supporting the bolster 3, yet it Will be readily understood that it is equally applicable to the front portion of the runninggear and may be employed for supporting the front sand-board.
The lower portion of the bracket l is secured to the running-gear, and the sides of it are supported by inclined braces 7, formed integral with the bracket and slightly curved, as shown. The braces 7, which extend forward or rearward, or both ways, from the sides of the bracket, have their terminals arranged on the running-gear and are perforated for the reception of bolts S or other suitable fastening devices.
The sides of the bracket l are connected at a point between their ends by a bolt 9, disposed horizontally and passing through perforations of the bracket, and the bolster is provided with a slot 10, which receives the bolt and permits the necessary vertical play of the bolster on the cushioning-springs 11, which are interposed between the bolster and the axle, as shown, but which are adapted to be arranged between the front axle and the sand-board.
In order to prevent the sides of the bolster from becoming Worn through contact with the bracket l during its vertical movement, it is provided at opposite sides with plates 12, arranged vertically at the inner faces of the sides of the bracket and interposed between the sides and the bolster. The plates are provided With vertical slots or openings to correspend with the transverse slot of the bolster l0,
and they have vertical flanges at their side edges, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings, and these iianges assist in supporting and guiding the bolster on the brackets.
The invention has the following advantages: 'Ihe bracket and the braces by being constructed of a single continuous strip of metal are easily manufactured and possess great strength and durability, besides being inexpensive. The bolster is protected from wear, and the construction for supporting and guiding the bolster is also applicable to sand-boards and may be employed on various styles of Wagon running-gear.
Changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
What I claim is-- l. In a device of the class described, the combination with an axle, of abolster or sand board having a transverse opening, a single continuous strip of metal bent between its ends to form a rectangular bracket and hav ing its end portions inclined and extending upward to the tops of the sides of the bracket, the latter being mounted above the axle and receiving` the bolster, and a horizontal fastening device connecting the sides of the bracket and arranged in the opening of the sand-board or bolster, substantially as described.

In a device of the class described, the combination with an axle, of a bolster or sandboard provided with a transverse slot or opening, a substantially rectangular bracket mounted above the axle and receiving the bolster or sand-board, plates secured to the sides of the bolster or sand-board and interposed between the same and the sides of the bracket and having vertical iianges at their side edges, said plates being provided with slots or openings registering with the said slot or opening, a fastening device connecting the sides of the bracket and passing through the said slots or openings, and an inclined brace connected with the top of the bracket and 15 supporting the same, substantially as del scribed.
