SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 610,919, dated Sep tember 20, 1898. Application filed. March 11, 1898. Serial No 673,518. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, WILLIAM A. RAUDA- BAUGH, residing at Pleasant Hill, in the county of Miami, and JOSHUA R. RAUDA- BAUGH, residing at Celina, in the county of Mercer, State of Ohio, citizens of the United States, have invented a new and useful Pulverizer, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to the class of drags or devices for crushing clods and pulverizing the soil after the same has been plowed preparatory to planting seed, thereby leveling the ground and putting it in condition for the raising of crops.

The purpose of this invention is the construction of a drag or earth-pulverizer which can be rolled into a compact form, so as to be conveniently stored when not required for immediate use, and which will admit of the bars being turned to present new corners when those in position for service have become worn.

For a full understanding of the merits and advantages of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings and the following description.

The improvement is susceptible of various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and to a full disclosure of the invention an adaptation thereof is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure l is a top plan View of a drag or earth-pulverizer embodying the essential features of the invention, the board for the driver or weights being shown by dotted lines. Fig. 2 is an end View showing the said board in position. Fig. 3 is a detail View of a pair of clips, showing them linked together.

to be treated, and these bars are placed in parallel relation and are flexibly connected, so as to admit of the pulverizer readily adapting itself to any inequalities in the surface over which the device is drawn. Angle or square clips 2 are fitted upon the end portions of the bars 1 and are formed of strips of sheet metal of suitable length bent between their ends, so as to inclose a space corresponding with a cross-sectional area of the bars, so as to be fitted snugly upon the latter. The end portions of the strips comprising the clips are bent to extend parallel, as shown at 3, and are apertured for the reception of bolts 4, by means of which the ends '3 are drawn together and the clips firmly secured upon the bars. Normally the bent ends 3 stand apart, whereby provision is had for contracting the clips, so as to bind the bars therein; Diagonally opposite corners of the clips are crimped or bent to provide bearings 5, which receive links 6, by means of which the clips and bars are flexibly connected, so as to admit of the pulverizer or drag being rolled and enabling it to adapt itself to uneven surfaces. The clips are placed with the bent ends 3 uppermost and with the crimps or bearings5 horizontal and corresponding with the front and rear corners of therespec tive bars. I

When the drag is constructed so as to cover a large area, it is preferred to have it com? posed of a number of similarly-formed sections which are placed side by side, thereby enabling the individual sections to adapt themselves to any roll or unevenness in the surface at right angles to the line of motion of the pulverizer. These sections are maintained in fixed relation by front and rear coupling-bars 7, which extend the combined length of the sections, measuring transversely, and are placed with their lower corners in engagement with the ground the same as the bars 1. Clips similar in construction to those herein described connect the front and rear bars of the sections centrally with the end portions of theicoupling-bars 7, thereby admitting of the said bars being turned when their lower A whiffietree 8 has con nection with the front coupling-bar, and the draft is applied thereto in the usual manner.

The board 9, for the driver or to receive weights in the event of its being desired to weight the pulverizer, is provided at its rear end with blocks 10, which are notched in their lower edges to fit over the upper corner of the rear coupling-bar, and its front end has a strip 11 applied thereto, which rests upon the upper corner of the front couplingbar, said strip and blocks holding the board clear of the bent ends 3 of the clips, and the notches in the blocks 10, fitting snugly over the upper corner of the rear coupling-bar, hold it in properposition when the drag is in operation.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In a drag or earth-pulverizer, the combination of a series of bars arranged in parallel relation, clips applied to the bars and embracing and bearing against the sides thereof and having front and rear portions crimped or bent forming bearings, and links having their end portions fitted into the bearings of the clips and connecting them, substantially in the mannerand for the purpose set forth.

In a drag or earth-pulverizer, the combination of a series of bars disposed in parallel relation and with their lower corners in engagement with the surface to be treated, clips embracing and bearing against the sides of the bars and having front and rear crimps or bends forming bearings, means for contracting the clips to cause them to grip the bars firmly, and links having their end portions fitted into the said bearings of the clips and connecting them in the manner described and for the purpose specified.

4:. In a drag or earth-pulverizer, the combination of a series of bars arranged in parallel relation and with their lower corners in position to engage with the earth, angle or square clips applied to the bars and formed of metal strips bent into a square form, and having their end portions bent outward to extend about parallel,and having their front and rear corners crimped, bolts passing through the apertured ends of the clips, and links fitted in the crimps of the clips and flexibly connecting them and the bars, substantially as set forth.
