Description

THEODORE SOHOLZ, OF STEUBEN, AND JOHN BIOKEL, OF ELKHAR'I COUNTY, INDIANA,
Letters Patent No. 31,02%, dated January 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN WATER-ELEVATORS.
"die tlgih'ule referat tu in there trttcrs ittrnt imhnmkjrg put tt its eine.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: y Y v Be it knomnlthat we, JOHN B. BICKEL and YTH'LODOBE SCHOLZE, of the counties of Elkhart and Steuben, in the State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Water-Elevators; andwedo hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the constructionand operation of the same, reference being had to the `accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of our improved water-elevator. i
Figure 2, Va front View of same.
Like letters in both figures oi' the drawings indicate like parts.
Our improvement has reference to the peculiar construction of an arm projecting from the crank at vthe 'point of its attachment to the shaft, operating Yin combination with a peculiarly constructedV pawl, the armv releasing the pawl from a circular ratchet tooth-plate, and lsimultaneousl)7 acting as a brake on the face side of the plate on the descent of the bucket. The circular ratchet tooth-plate, constructed with a suitable number of'pcrforations, equal distance. apart, around near the periphery of the sante, for the introduction-of a pin on the crank in such ones as maybe desired for revolvingr the plate, and thus turn the windlass to elevate the bucket, may be deemed an essential feature of our improvement.
The construction and operation of the parts herein referred to arede'scribed as follows: 'A is the circular ratchet toothplate, provided with perforations a in the manner and for the purpose above remarked.v It is supported on a small shaft sumciently loose to admit of an easy rotation thereon. The shaft is secured by a suitable bearing, I, on the cross-piece b of the framing around the well. TheA plate is also provided with a circular recess on the back of it, having teeth inverted from the'periphery thereof to the axis of motion.` Located in the recess `and meshing into theI teeth therein are the teeth of a pinion-wheel on the end of the windlass B, 1which latter is secured by suitable bearings on the cross-pieces of the framing. This completes the gearing apparatus for raising and lowering the bucket, with the exception of the crank and pawl, which will now be described. C represents the`erank on the shaft of the ratchet tooth-plate. The shaft being constructed with a nut, c, on the end of it, is introduced through the hole of the crank and that ofthe plate, and thence .screwed into the bearing by a wrench applied to the nut. This brings the crank against the side ofthe plate, where it may be tightened or loosened as occasion may require'. The arm ofv thecrank projects from the shaft as far as the teeth of 'the plate, and is notched around' near the 'end of it, forming a hook, d, thereon. The crank below the shaft has a pin, e, (see iig. 2,) opposite to the perforationsin the plate. 'D is the paWl, supported cna small shaft, secured by a suitable bearing on the cross-pieceof the framing. It is constructed with an arm, f, of sufeient gravity from its fulcrum to counterbalance the opposite arm and thus keep it constantly in the teeth of the plate luntil other wise moved therefrom. This arm has a piece projecting a little on theface side of the plate, having a catch, g.V
v Operation: When it is desired to raise the bucket, E, from the well, by taking hold of the handle of the crank and introducing the pin in one of the perforations and turning the same, the plate is revolved and with it the Windlass. The outer part of the hole of the crank surrounding the shaft is chamfered ot?, and the back part of it slightly rounded, suiiciently to permit an easy lateral movement of the crank against the side of the plate, so that but little trouble will be experienced in inserting the pin in any of the perforations for turning the plate, as well as the withdrawal of the same for the release of the pawl. When it is desired to lower the bucket, bybringing the crank around in either a forward or backward direction, whichever convenient, and pressing the hook of the arm of the'crank into the catch of the pawl, (see same in red lines in iig. 1,) either up 01 down, and by pressing Vthe arm against the side 4of the plate at the same time, it acts as a brake, which, by a greater or less pressure, the bucket Amay be let down into the Well slow or fast.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I f The crank (las constructed, with an arm and hook ot, in combination with the pawhcateh g and perforated plate A, substantially in the manner and for the purpose as herein set forth. K
, v THEODQRE SOHOLZE JOHN B. BICKEL.
