HOT-WATER H EATER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 619,542, dated February 14, 1899.
Application filed May 3, 1898. Serial No. 679,612. (No model.)

Be it known that I, ABNER F. BUTTRICK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Everett, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Hot-Water Heater, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to hot-Water apparatus for heating buildings, and has for its object to economize in the construction of such apparatus and generally improve and simplify such construction.
With this object in view my inventionconsists in the improved construction, arrangement, and combination of parts constituting a hot-Water heating apparatus and a masonry case therefor, all as Will be described hereinafter and afterward specifically pointed out in the claim.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention most nearly appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction andoperation, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this speciication, in which- Figure l is a vertical sectional view of my improved hot-water heating apparatus, taken on a plane extending vertically through it from front to rear. Fig. 2 is a sectional view thereof, taken on the vertical plane indicated by the broken line 2 2 of Fig. l.

Referring to the drawings by letters, A indicates a brick casing, within which is located or embedded my improved hot-water heating apparatus, said brickwork being constructed to form a main chamber B to include the greater part ofthe apparatus and to form a portion of the iire-box thereof, an opening C leading from the chamber B and being provided with a door D, through which to introduce fuel, and a second opening E, also on the front, leading from below the firebox, forming the ash-pit and being provided with a door F. A brick partition G is built crosswise of the main chamber, thereby forming a main flue H, with a branch I, leading to the upper part ofthe main chamber B, and a branch J, leading from the lower part of the main chamber B, the upper branch I being provided with a damper K, by means of which it may be closed when desired. An opening VL extends from the bottom of the flue to the rear ofthe casing for the removal of ashes and soot and is provided with a door M'. Within the chamber B is located the metallic portion of the apparatus, which consists of a main tank surrounding the fire-box, comprising side chambers N, front chamber O, and rear chamber P to communicate With each other and form substantially a single chamber, the front chamber being of a less height than the rest in order to leave the proper opening in communication with the opening O of the brick casing to receive fuel through the door D. These chambers are connected by tubes or pipes Q, which extend to the upper Water-chamber R, which extends entirely over the iire-box. A pipe S leads from the Water-supply into the lower.

The construction of my invention will be readily understood from the foregoing, and its operation may be described as follows: A fire being built in the iire-box, the products of combustion will pass through either the direct-draft flue I or the indirect-draft iiue J and out of the main iiue H, which leads to the chimney, the direction being controlled by opening or closing the damper K by means of its handle K', the draft being turned downward and through the indirect-draft iiue J when the damper K is closed. The fire will communicate its heat to the chambers N, 0, and P, surrounding it, and in the usual manner, well known, will cause a circulation of the hot water through the pipe T, the servicepipes and radiators, and the return-pipe S', the water in the pipes after having been used through the building being returned to the bottom of the chambers N N and again circulated through the pipe T, all waste being replaced through the pipe S.
While I have illustrated and described IOO what I 110W consider to be the best means for carrying out my invention, I do not Wish to be understood as restricting myself to the exact forms and constructions shown, but hold that any slight variation therefrom such as might suggest itself to the ordinary mechanic would properly fall Within the limit and scope of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
