Be it known that I, GEORGE M. BISHOP, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locomotive-Tenders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in locomotive-tenders.
The object of my invention is to provide a locomotive-tender with a device which will continually feed the water from its storagetank to the boiler of the engine.
In the ordinary locomotive-tenders, which are furnished with ejectors or outlets for the water only at their forward ends, it is a common occurrence when traveling up a steep grade or rounding a curve, which will pitch the tender to one side, for the water to be forced into the back part of its storage-tank or to one side thereof, and the feed to the boiler thereby lessened and in some cases discontinued.
I aim to overcome the foregoing by providing a series of ejectors or outlets at the rear and forward ends of the tender, which are connected by suitable pipes, which will be hereinafter more fully described.
My invention finally consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In describing my invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, wherein like numerals of reference indicate the corresponding parts throughout the several views thereof, and in which-- Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a portion of the locomotive-tender with a portion of my improved device applied to the bottom thereof. Fig. 2 is an underneath plan view of a portion of a locomotive-tender, showing my improved device attached thereto. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view of a portion of a locomotive-tender, showing the rear ejectors or outlets attached to the bottom thereof. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of my improved device.
Referring to the drawings by referencenumerals, 1 indicates the tank portion of a locomotive-tender, and to the bottom thereof I secure the rear ejectors or outlets 2 and forward ejectors or outlets 3.
The ejectors to outlets 2 have secured to their lower ends the elbows 4 5, in which are suitably secured the downwardly-inclined discharge-pipes 6 7, which are connected to the ejectors or outlets3 by means of T-pipes 8 9, which are connected to the lower ends of the ejectors or outlets 3. It will be readily apparent that, owing to the downwardly-inclined discharge-pipes 6 7, when the water is in the backward portion of the tank when the tender is climbing an upgrade the same will be readily ejected therefrom, and a continual feed to the boiler will be obtained.
To prevent the interruptionof the flow of the water to the boiler when the tender is rounding a curve, in which case the tender is pitched on one side, thereby forcing the water in the tank on the pitched side, I connect the two forward ejectors or outlets 3 together by means of a pipe 10. It will be readily observed that, owing to the pipe 10, the water will be fed continuously to the boiler from the ejectors or outlets 3, which is opposite to the pitched side of the tender. l1 and 12 indicate the feed-water pipes, which are connected to the forward ejectors at one end and to the boiler at their opposite ends.
The discharge-pipes 6 7 are supported by means of the brackets 13 14, which are secured to the bottom of the tender, as at 15 16.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the operation of my improved device can be readily understood.
It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of myinvention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a locomotive-tender a pair of ejectors or outlets secured to the bottom at the rear thereof, a pair of ejectors or outlets secured to the bottom at the front thereof, and means such as a pipe connected to said ejectors or outlets whereby a continuous flow of Water from the Water-tank to the boiler is obtained, substantially as herein set forth.
2. In a locomotive-tender a series of ejectors or outlets secured to the same at its front and rear thereof, inclined discharge-pipes connected to said ejectors, and a pipe connecting the front ejectors or outlets, and means for connecting the said front ejectors to the boiler, whereby a continuous flow of water is obtained, substantially as herein set forth.
