STEAM-G EN ERATO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 619,160, dated. February '7, 1899.
Application filed May 131 1898. Serial No. 680,600. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OSEPH HARMIDAS FOURNIER, of Whitehall, in the county of Washington and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Steam-Generator, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved steam-generator which is simple and durable in construction and ar ranged to insure a proper circulation of the water and a quick generation of steam with a minimum expenditure of fuel.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
The boiler A is mounted in the usual brickwork B of the furnace, and the front lower end of the boiler is connected with a front pipe connection 0, provided with a valve 0 and extending first through the front wall B of the furnace to bring the valve 0 to the outside under the control of the engineer, the pipe connection then extending downward and through the front wall B to form into a grate-coil 0 forming the grate for the firebox, the rear end of the coil 0 terminating in a vertically-disposed coil C in front of the bridge-wall B and extending close up to the boiler A. A pipe connection 0 leads from the uppermost end of the coil 0 rearwardly under the boiler, to then extend upwardly in the combustion-chamber B and terminate in a coil 0 arranged in a horizontal direction in the combustion-chamber at or above the fines A of the boiler A. The end of the coil terminates in the boiler A, at the rear end thereof. Avalve (J is arranged in the outer end of the rear pipe connection 0 to be under the control of the engineer.
The feed-water pipe D may lead directly into the boiler A, but preferably connects with the front pipe connection 0 below the valve 0, as indicated in the drawings.
vNow when the generator is in use the fuel is burned on the coil 0 which forms the grate for the fire-box, and the water from the boiler A can readily circulate through the pipe and its coils by passing from the front lower end of the boiler through the pipe connection 0, to and through the grate-bar coil 0 then up through the coil 0 rearward through the connection 0 up into the combustion-chamber, and through the coil 0 to then pass by the connection 0 back into the boiler, at the rear thereof. It is evident that the burning fuel on the grate-bar coils O heats the water passing through said coil to a considerable degree, and the smoke and gases arising from the burning fuel in passing rearwardly over the bridge-wall B have to pass through the spaces between the pipes forming the coil 0 so that the water is again heated while passing through said bridge-wall coil. The water is further heated by the hot products of combustion during their upward passage through the combustion-chamber B to enter the flues A, which convey the same forwardly, whereby such incandescent gas is drawn around and between the members of the coil 0 Thus when the water finally reaches the rear end of the boiler it is heated to a compara-- tively high degree, so that steam is generated very quickly.
By the construction described a very rapid circulation of the water is obtained without danger of sediment accumulating in any part of the pipe connecting the ends of the boiler with each other, as described. By having the feed-water pipe D directly connected with the circulating-pipe it is evident that the pump, injector, or like device used for forcing the water through the feed-pipe is greatly released, as the forward circulation of the water in the circulating-pipe causes the suction of the Waterin the feed-pipe D.
The device can be readily attached to any style of boilerstationary, marine, or locomotive type-=by making the coils and pipe connections fit the same. By having the valves O, O, and C the generator can be readily de- D can be used as a blow-off by shutting ofi the pipe 0, thereby getting back pressure from pipe C to coil C through the pipe 0 to coil 0 to coil 0 down to pipe D, thus insuring the means for thoroughly cleaning the pipes and coils of the generator of all possible sediment as often as desired. The devices can readily be attached to any style of boiler by making the coils and pipe connections to fit the same.
Having thus fully described my invention,
' a I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A steam-generator having a mounting comprising a fire-box, a boiler proper sustained in the mounting,a front pipe connection passin g from the front portion of the boiler proper to,the outside of the mounting and returning into the fire-box thereof, a grate-coil disposed horizontally in the fire-box to form the grate thereof and having communication with the front pipe-section, a vertically-disposed coil communicating with the grate-coil and located in front of the bridge-wall of the mounting, a pipe leading from the vertically-disposed coil to the rear of the boiler proper and extending upwardly, a third coil disposed horizontally at the rear end of the boiler and communicating with the rearwardly-extending pipe, and a rear pipe connection communicating with the third coil and extending upwardly above the boiler proper and thence downwardly into the same.
