INNER TUBE FOR PNEUMATIC TIRES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 618,072, dated January 24, 1899. Application filed September 10, 1898. Serial No. 690,655. (No model.)
To all whont t muy concern:
Be it known that LJ AMES H. DEIsCoLL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rouses Point, in the county of Clinton and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Inner Tubes for Pneumatic Tires, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in inner tubes for pneumatic tires; and the object is to improve the construction and increase the resiliency and durability of the compound tire, so as to particularly adapt it for use on trotting-sulkies and heavy vehicles.
To this end the invention consists in forming the inner tube into two counterpart sections. i
It further consists in the manner of protecting the abutting ends of said sections.
It also consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the several parts of the device, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
The accompanying drawings show my invention in the best form now known to me; but many changes in the details might be made within the skill of a good mechanic without departing from the spirit of the invention, as set forth in the claim at the end of this specification.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of my improved inner tube as it appears incased within the outer tire. Fig. 2 is a plan view of one of the tube-sections. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the guard-plates.
1 denotes the outer tube or tire, and it is formed with the flaps 2 2, which are located at the side of the nipple-holes and contiguous to the rim 4.. Each ap 2 is formed with an orifice and the contiguous ends of the solid portion of the tire are also formed with corresponding orices 6 and 7.
8 denotes a curved or crescent-shaped plate, which is provided on its outer face with a studbolt 9 and nut 10, and 12 denotes a counterpart plate, which is provided with an orifice 13 to receive the bolt 9 and on its inner face with the two short studs or teats 14 14, which correspond to the orifices 6 and 7 in the tire.
15 15 denote the independent inner tubes, and as one is a facsimile of the other the description of one will answer for both. Each tube 15 forms a half-circle, closed at its outer ends and provided about midway with the usual valved nipple 16.
17 17 denote envelops or caps, preferably formed of linen or some similar suitable fabric and having their inner ends connected by a tape 1S.
The manner of assembling the parts is as follows: The inner tubes 15 are first deiiated and the caps or envelops slipped over the outer ends of the tubes, as shown in Fig. 2. One end of the tube is then inserted at the flap in the outer tube or tire and forced 4around until the nipple is in line with the nipple-orifice in the rim. The other end is then inserted in like manner and the nipple pressed inwardly and brought out through the rim. The other tube 15 is then inserted at the other flap in like manner. The plate S is then inserted between the outerand inner tubes, so that the orioe in the ap will close down over the stud-bolt 9, and the plate 12 is then placed over the iiap-opening s0 the studs 14 14. will extend into the orifices 6 and 7 in the outer tube and the orice 13 encompass the stud-bolt on the plate 8. The nut 10 is now screwed down on the stud-bolt 9 and the two plates brought together to effectively close the flap-opening. The tire is now ready for inflation.
The insertion of the inner tubes in the outer tire may be accomplished in any suitable manner; but it may be very rapidly, effectively, and conveniently done by means of a clamp carrier described and illustrated by me in a concurrent application, serially numbered 690,656.
