ALBERT L. LAMBERT, OF CLEVELAND, OIIIO.
LAWN-SPRINKLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 617,688, dated January 10, 1899.
Application filed January 28, 1898. Serial No. 668,305. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT L. LAMBERT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, county of Ouyahoga, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lawn-Sprinklers, of which I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description, such as will e11- able others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in lawn-sprinklers and the objects of the invention are to provide a form of sprinklerwhich will shower the greatest possible breadth of territory and which can be adjusted to direct the stream to either side thereof, as desired.
My invention consists in the combination and arrangement of jet-passages and con struction of the various details, as hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows a plan view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse horizontal section of the same.
Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section on center line, Fig. 1.
In the views, 1 is a flat base adapted to rest upon the lawn and to which the hose is directly attached at 2.
3 is the inner water-chamber, into which the water is introduced through two passages I and 5, the passage at leading directly into the center of the chamber, while the passage 5 is circular in shape following the Wall of the chamber and narrowed. at its entrance thereto at 6, the effect of which is to throw a strong jet into the chamber from the side of the narrowed extremity, giving it greater force. The central diameter is provided with a curved top 9, which deflects the whirling stream within into the central opening '7, from whence it issues as an even-spreading circular sheet.
In order to confine the spray to one side of the sprinkler, the shield 8 is placed over one side of the jet or the other, thus cutting off that side and turning it in the other direction.
To secure the shield detachably to either side of the sprinkler, it is provided with the squared opening 11, which is set over the squared pins 10 on either side.
The rectangular shape prevents the shield from turning under the force of the jet.
I believe myself to be the first to provide a sprinkler constructed as described and also the first to provide a detachable and also reversible shield to control the direction of the jet.
At 12 is seen a raised loop of metal to which a chain or cord can be attached to draw the sprinkler along the lawn and admit of the base always lying level.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a lawn-sprinkler, the combination with a base, of a central circular chamber, a passage leading directly from the hose at tachrnent to said chamber, and a circular pas sage leading around said chamber and pro vided with a reduced outlet opening tangentially into said chamber, and a curved top to said chamber provided with a central open ing, substantially as described.
2. In a lawn-sprinkler, a fiat base, raised water-chambers provided with central ventopening, in combination with a curved shield adapted to direct the flow of the jet, and means for attaching the shield to either side of the sprinkler consisting of, integral pins of angular section, and an angular aperture in the shield, substantially as described.
ALBERT L. LAMBERT.
