CHARLES A. BARTLIFF, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO THE STAR BUCKET PUMP COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
PUMP-CURB.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 617,219, dated January 3, 1899.
Application filed December 20, 1897. Serial No. 662,630. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. BARTLIFF, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing in the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Pump-Curbs, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and'use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved pump-curb, the top or cover being raised. Fig. 2 is a top plan view, partly in section, showing the manner of attaching the reservoir thereto. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail View showing the manner of joining the reservoir to the end walls of. the curb. Fig. 4 is a detail view of one of the side panels, the middle portion thereof being broken away. Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view through one of the end pieces of the curb, showing the manner of attaching the lower end of the reservoir thereto; and Fig. 6 is a detail view of one of the end pieces with the reservoir at-' tached.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in pump-curbs, the object being to construct a device of the character described which will be cheap in construction B indicates the cover or top, which may be of any approved construction.
C indicates the side panels, which are preferably made of sheet metal and formed with side flanges c, which fit into the grooves a of the end pieces A and A.
D indicates a strengthening-cleat arranged at the bottom of the structure when the panels C are in position.
E also indicates a strengthening-cleat arranged at the top of the structure when the panels 0 are in position, and over the upper edges of this cleat E, I prefer to bend a flange c of the panel C and nail said flanges to the cleat E to strengthen the panels throughout their upper edges.
' F indicates a reservoir, which, as shown more clearly in Figs. 2, 5, and 6, consists of a piece of sheet metal, preferably bent over at its upper edge, as at f, to strengthen the same. The side walls of this reservoir terminate in flanges f,.which fit into the grooves a of the end piece A. The lower or bottom wall of this reservoir is formed or provided with a flange f, which is held firmly in position against the inner face of the end piece A by a cleat G, which is nailed in position, as shown in Fig. 5. I
In assembling the several parts the reservoir F is first placed in position on the end piece A, as shown in Fig. 6, no nails being used except for the purpose of securing the cleat G in position, and through the medium of said cleat the lower end of the resorvoir is held in place. The side panels are now arranged with their flanges in position in the grooves a, said side panels being nailed in position. The cleats D and E are then secured in place and the flange c nailed to the upper edge of cleat E. The body of the pump-curb is now complete and ready for shipment. The top B may be of any shape, as I do not claim anything new or'novel in the construction of said top.
The cleats E are preferably provided with openings forming bearin gs in which the pump rigging is mounted, and an opening a is made in the end piece A for the purpose of providing a passage for water from the reservoir,
and in which passage or opening is preferably secured a suitable spout. (Not shown).
The pump-curb herein described is especially designed for use in connection with chain-and-bucket pumps; but I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to these particular pump mechanisms.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a pump-curb, the combination with end pieces, which are grooved at their edges, of a reservoir formed with flanges fitting in said grooves, said reservoir being, also, formed with a depending flange at its bottom, and a cleat for securing said depending flange to one of the end pieces, substantially as described.
2. The combination with the end pieces A and A, which are grooved at their side edges, of a reservoir which is secured to the inner face of piece A, and side panels having flanges at their edges which fit into the grooves in said end pieces, substantially as described. 3. In a pump-curb, the combination with the end Walls, of a reservoir whose end walls are secured to the edges of one of said end walls, a flange on the lower end of said reser voir, a cleat for holding said reservoir in position, being nailed over the depending flange thereof, and side panels having flanges which fit into grooves in the edges of said end Walls, substantially as described.
4;. In a pump-curb, the combination with the end walls A and A which are grooved along their side edges, of a reservoir F having flanges f at its side which fit into the grooves in the end wall A, a flange f extending below said reservoir, a cleat G which engages said depending flange, and side panels 0 formed with flanges at their side edges which fit into the grooves in the end walls A and A, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses,
this 13th day of December, 1897.
CHARLES A. BARTLIFF.
Witnesses:
HUGH K. WAGNER, F. R. CORNWALL.
