Be it known that I, JAMES A. KINGsLnY, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the reference-numerals marked thereon.

My present invention has for its object to provide a receptacle, particularly adapted for use as a lunch-box, which is adapted to be folded When not in use into small compass, so as to be capable of being readily carried in the pocket; and it consistsin certain improvements hereinafter described, the novel features being pointed out particularly in the claims at the end of thisV specification.

The front and rear sides of the box (indicated by l and 2, respectively) are formed of stiff material, such as millboard or cardboard, and to the top of the rear side is hinged the cover 3, having the securing-flap Ll, be tween which latter and the front of the box is arranged a suitable fastening device, as a catch 5.

The bottom and ends of the box are of flexible material, creased, folded, or otherwise rendered flexible on the lines shown, to formthe front bottom panel 6, the rear bottom panel 7, the triangularpanels 8 and 9 at the ends of the bottom, and the ends of the box are composed of the panels l0 and 1l, fiexibly united to the triangular' panels 8 and 9 and to the front and rear of the box. I prefer to make the bottom and ends of an inner lining of heavy cloth, as 12, to Which is closely attached, by glue or otherwise, an exterior covering 13, of stamped cloth, leather, or other material in a single piece, that covers the box front, bottom, and ends, giving the article a smooth and finished exterior.

14 I4 indicate stretchers or braces of stiff cardboard or similar material hinged to the ends of either the front or rear sides of the box, (in the present instance they are hinged at l5 to the rear side,) said stretchers being equal in length to the Width of the box and of substantially its depth and adapted when the box is set up to extend out against the ends and hold the parts rigidly, and when the box is collapsed or folded, as in Fig. 2 in dotted lines, to fold against the rear side, so as to occupy but little space and enable the box to be folded substantially flat, the cover being folded against the rear side.

The box -described is simple and cheap and is capable of being readily extended or set up, having considerable capacity, and may be folded into small compass, so as to be readily carried in the users pocket.

It Will be understood that the boxes can be used for other purposes than lunch-boxes, though they are particularly adapted for this use, and also that other materials can be employed than cloth and cardboard.

I claim as my inventionl. The herein-described folding box embodying the relatively sti front andrear sides, the ends iiexible at the center, hinged to the box sides and to the bottom, the bottom flexible longitudinally and iiexibly connected to the sides, and the stretchers or expanders hinged to the end ofone side and adapted to engage the other, substantially as described.
