NrrE STATES MACHINE FOR SHEARlNG, CUTTlNG, 0R CLIPPING WOOL, HAIR, &c.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters P atene No. 616,448, dated December 27, 189s.
Application filed December 27,1897. Serial No. 663,799. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom, t 17mg concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK BURGoN, a subject of the Queen ot Great Britain, residing at Shefeld, in the West Riding of York county, England, have invented a Vnew and useful Improvement in Machines for Sheariug, Cutting, or Clipping lVool, Hair, or the Like, (for which I have iiled an application for Letters Patent in Great Britain, bearing date the 23d of October, 1897, and numbered 2l,589,) of which the following is a full and complete specification.
This invention relates to mechanicallydriven machines for shearing, cutting, or clipping wool, hair, or the like; and it consists in supporting` the rocker-bar behind the point at which the actuating power is applied, or, in other words, in applying the actuating power between the point of pivot and the rear point of support, whereby a more uniform contact between the cutter and the comb is obtained, thus improving the quality and capacity of the work done by the machine.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view in longitudinal section of a machine embodying this invention. Fig. 2 is a view in transverse section on line .fr fr, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a view in plan; and Figs. 4e and are views in longitudinal and transverse section, rcspec tively, showing a modification.
Throughout the views similar parts are marked with like letters of reference.
The rocker-bar A is pivoted on a spindle B, having a spherical-shaped shoulderb, engag-` ing with a spherical-shaped recess in the rocker-bar, and it receives an oscillating motion from the driving-shaft G by means of a crank-disk c and crank-pin c through a ball or slide D, sliding in a vertical path u in the rocker-bar. To support the rocker-bar A and allow pressure to be exerted on its front end carrying the cutter E by means of the adjustable cap F, the bar is extended rearward beyond the path a and terminates in a pin Ct', carrying a block G, which preferably takes the form of a roller, which takes abearing on a horizontal path 7L, formed on the back of the case H, above the bearing for the drivingshaft C. As a modification the path h may be arranged at the bottom of the case II, below the shaft C, as shown by Figs. and 5, in which case the supporting medium takes the form of a skeleton quadrant G. To allow for play and unequal wear of the comb E' and the cutter E, the pin a is made parallel, and the hole in the roller or block G or quadrant G is made bell-mouthed, or the pin a may take the form of a barrel or ball and thehole in the block or roller or its equivalent be made parallel.
The parts to which no speciic reference has been made are of the usual construction and present no novel features.
IVhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
, In a machine for shearing and cutting wool, the combination with the casing, the comb and the cutter, of a rocker-bar to which the actuating power is applied between its point of pivot and its rear point of support, a tension-spindle on which the bar is pivoted provided with a spherical-shaped shoulder engagin g with a cup-shaped recess in the rockerbar, a cap screwed into the case and bearing on the spindle, a horizontal path in the rear of the casing and a block upon the rear of the rocker-bar supported on said path, as and for the purpose set forth.
FREDERICK BURGON.
