OLIVER II. P. CORNELL, OF HARRISONBURG, VIRGINIA.
BARREL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No; 615,530, dated December 6, 1898. .Annlication filed December 10, 1897- Serial No. 661,406. (lIo model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLIVER H. P. CORNELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Harrisonburg, in the county of Rockingham and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrels; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to barrels, and has for its object the construction of barrels which can be crated and shipped at small expense and put together or set up wherever it is desired to use them without the employment of skilled labor; and it consists in certain improvements in construction which will be fully disclosed in the following specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, Figure 1 represents an elevation showing the outside of the staves of a barrel connected to hoops; Fig. 2, aperspective view of a barrel; Fig. 3, a transverse section of part of a barrel on an enlarged scale; Fig. 4, a side view of a modification of the locking-hook on one end of the hoops, and Fig. 5 a section through one of the staves.
Reference being had to the drawings and the letters thereon, A indicates the staves of the barrel, which are preferably provided with straight parallel sides beveled inwardly to form av circular body and provided at their ends with the ordinary croze (not shown) to receive the heads 13 of the barrel.
0 indicates the hoops, preferably made of wire, secured to each stave by means of staples a,which form loops over the hoops and in which the hoops are free to move or slide, so that the slack of the entire length of the hoops may be taken up and the staves drawn closely together and the ends of the hoops i11- terlocked and securely fastened together. One end of the hoops is provided with an elongated loop 1), formed in the wire and the end twisted or wrapped about the hoop adjacent to the loop to form a collar 17, and the opposite end is provided with a hook 0, provided with a plurality of teeth (1, and the hook may be made of the wire of the hoop, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, or it may be made of a separate piece of sheet metal c with teeth f formed in it, as shown in Fig. 4:, and one end of the hoop G secured thereto by a loop 19 The heads B, only one of which is shown, may be made in'one or in several pieces 9 h t, properly secured together by a batten 7s and small nails 1, which will admit of the pieces of the head being drawn together should they become separated by shrinkage of the wood or from any other cause by the upper and lower hoops of the barrel.
D indicates a lever having a claw Z], which engages the hoop 0 back of the collar 1) adjacent to the loop I), and is provided with an arm 112, having a hook at at its outer end, which engages a tooth of the hook c on the hoop and by which the hoop is drawn taut, and the loop I) is then engaged with one of the teeth (1 of the hook c, which lies in close engagement with the surface of the barrel to prevent interference therewith in handling the barrel.
The barrel thus constructed may be prepared in rough shops in the woods or forest, packed in large quantities for shipment on cars or vehicles, and conveyed to where they are to be used, when the parts may be assembled and the barrel completed by unskilled labor, thereby causing great saving in the expense of hauling.
After a barrel has been used it may be knocked down and returned for refilling at very small cost.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- 1. An improved article of manufacture, a barrel composed of staves and a plurality of hoops provided with interlocking ends, one of said ends having an elongated loop and a collar adjacent to the loop formed by twisting the wire around the hoop, said loop and collar being integral with the hoop and the opposite end of the hoop provided with a serrated hook, and loops connecting the hoops to the staves to slide thereon.
2 An improved article of manufacture, a knockdown barrel composed of staves anda plurality of hoops, each hoop having a loop at one end integral therewith and a collar adjacent thereto and a serrated hook attached to the opposite end of the hoop byaloop, the
hoops connected to the staves to slide thereon by loops on the staves, and the hooks in contact with the surface of the barrel.
3. A barrel provided with Wire hoops having a loop and a collar adjacent thereto and integral with the hoop at one end thereof, and a serrated hook attached to the opposite end of the hoop by a loop, and loops to connect the hoops to the staves to slide thereon; in
combination with a lever having a claw, and 10 an arm attached to the lever and having a hook at the outer end thereof.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
OLIVER H. P. CORNELL. lVitnesses:
