AUTOMATIC FEEDING MECHANISM FOR DRILLING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 614,866, dated November 29, 1898. Application filed January 12, 1898. Serial No. 666,404. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. Horon- KISS, of Oourtland, in the county of Lawrence, in the State of Alabama, have invented new and useful Improvements in Automatic Feeding Mechanisms for Drilling-Machines, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in drilling-machines,having more particular reference to automatic screw-feed drill-presses.
My object is to produce such a mechanism cheap, durable, and positive in its operation and of great utility; and to that end my invention consists in the several new features of construction and operation hereinafter described and which are specifically set forth in the claim hereunto annexed.
It is constructed as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows a side view of the drill and drill-supportcomplete ready for operation.
: Fig. 2 is a cross-section on line 00 at, Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a section on line y y, Fig. 1. Fig.
4 is a vertical section on line a a, Fig. 1.
igs. 5 and 6 are top and edge views, respectively, of the pawl detached. 7
l is a frame or bracket having a transverse opening 2, as shown in Fig. 1, upwardly-extending arms 3 and 4, an opening 5 at the bottom, and an opening 6 at one side, through which the shaft 7 extends, conveying the 3 5 power. Within the frame and in the transverse opening is mounted a gear 8, to which is secured the sleeve 9 and adapted to rotate with said gear, the upper end of said gear passing into the arm 3, where it is adapted to rotate, and means provided for lubricating it. 7
Upon the sleeve 9 and upon the upper face of the gear 8 is secured an eccentric 10, and
11 is a loose collar surrounding it provided upon one edge with means 12 for securing to it the arm 13 upon the lower end of the shaft 14.
In the lower end of the sleeve 9 is a recess 15, in which the drill 16 is mounted.
The arm 3 is internally threaded, as shown in Fig. 4, above the point occupied by the sleeve 9, and 17 is a screw or threaded shaft having upon its upper end a hand-wheel 18, and the top 19 being provided with means for suspending it from an arm 20 by means of a collar 21; but inasmuch as the arm and collar form the subject of another applica tion they are not further described.
The shaft 17 is provided with a slot 22, as shown in Fig. 1, and 23 isa loose sleeve sur- 6o rounding the shaft 17 and upper end of arm 3 and resting on top of the arm 3, and having hinged thereto a link 24.
WVithin the arm 4 I mount the shaft 14 and provide it with an arm 25, having a slot 26, T-shaped in cross-section in its upper face, as shown in Fig. 2, and 27 is a thumb-screw passing through the arm 24 and having a head 28 upon its lower end adapted to travel in the slot 26.
Upon one side of the sleeve 23 I secure a bracket 29, which carries a bolt 30, and upon said bolt I secure a pawl 31, having a downward extension 32, having triangular faces.
33 is a ratchet-collar provided with a feather 34, adapted to engage with the slot 22 in the shaft 17, so that the rotation of the collar 33 will cause the shaft 17 to rotate.
Vithin the sleeve 23 I mount a spring-actuated bolt 34, the head upon the outer end adapted to engage with the triangular sides of the lower end of the pawl 32, so as to hold the pawl either in engagement with the ratchet-teeth 35 upon the collar 33 or out of engagement.
My invention is operated as follows: When the shaft 7 is rotated, the gear on the end within the bracket engages with the gear 8, and thereby rotates the sleeve 9, in which the drill is mounted. The eccentric, with the roo tation, operates the collar 11, so as to produce an oscillating motion to the arm 13. (Shown in Fig. 3.) This in turn turns backward and forward the shaft 14, and consequently the arm 25, and as this is secured by the link 24 to the sleeve 23 a similar movement is imparted to this sleeve, and inasmuch as the pawl 31 is secured to the said sleeve it imparts to the collar 33 a rotary motion, thereby rotating the screw-threaded shaft 17, 10c
and inasmuch as the shaft 17 is in engage ment with the internally-threaded arm 3 the arm and frame 1 are raised or lowered, accordingly as the pawl 31 is in engagement with the ratchets 35 upon the collar 33, in such a manner as to impart either a feeding motion or a receding movement.
It will be observed that the feed may be accelerated or retarded by the point at which the arm 24: engages the arm If I desire to feed very rapidly, the thumbscrew 27 is released and the link 24E secured to the end of the arm 25. To retard thefeeding, I again loosen the thumb-screw 27 and draw in the outer end of the link 2% and again secure it upon the arm 25, so as to reduce the sweep, and thereby lessen the distance of the travel of the sleeve 23, and consequently the ratchet 31 will make shorter oscillations.
In the drawings I have shown the machine as feeding. lVhen I desire to withdraw the drill, I reverse the pawl 31 and allow it to feed back.
It will also be observed that in case I desire to discontinue the automatic feed I throw the pawl 31 around so that it extends away from the ratchet, where it is held by the spring-actuated bolt 3t, and use the handwheel 18.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a drilling-machine, an automatic feed comprising a frame having a drill mounted therein, and means for operating it, a vertically-slotted threaded shaft supporting said f rame,a ratchet-collar surrounding said shaft, and loose vertically thereon, and having a feather engaging said slot, a sleeve surrounding said shaft carrying a pawl and oscillating means for engaging said pawl with said ratchet and means for adjusting the throw of said pawl with respect to said ratchet for the purpose of regulating the speed of the feed substantially as described for the purposes set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 27th day of December, 1807.
WILLIAM E. IIOTCIIKISS.
