SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 614,536, dated November 22, 18981 Application filed October '7, 1897. Serial No- 6 4, (N0 model- To (LZZ 1072,0712, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PHILIP B. CURRAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia,State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful I mprovement in Hydrocarbon -Burners, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of a hydrocarbonburner the novel features of which will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims that follow the specification.
Figures 1 and 3 represent side elevations of an incandescent hydrocarbon-burner embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section thereof. Fig. at represents a top or plan view of a portion thereof. Fig. 5 represents a side elevation of a detached portion.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the oil inlet or supply of the burner, the same being connected with the vertical casing A, within which are the bores 13 and D,the wall B between the two bores extending to nearly the top of the casing, where the chamber 0 exists,which chamber forms a communication between the bores in the upper end of the casing. The lower end of the bore D is in communication with the chamber E of the needlevalve E, whose outlet F is below the mixingchamber G,which is located aside of the casing A and is in communication with the mixing-chamber H, which surrounds the portion of the casing A above said chamber G.
WVithin the chamber G is a laterally-projecting piece I, forming a deflector for the vapor in said chamber. At the top of said chamber,which is open, is the piece of gauze J, it being noticed that the portion Pof the casing above the chamber H will be subject to the flame, and thus highly heat the chamber O,whereby the vaporization of oil in said chamber will be effected.
At the top of the casing A is the removable plug llLwhereby the interior of said casing is accessible for cleansing and other purposes, said plug being an upward prolongation of the casing and subjected to the flame, the heat of which is transmitted to the wall of the vaporizing-chamber, which is also primarily heated by said flame.
The outer end of the valve-chamber-E is occopied by the screw N,which when removed admits of access to said chamber for any purpose requiring the same.
K-designates a valve for controlling the supply of oil or fluid to the bore B.
The supply of vapor or gas issuing from the outlet F is regulated by the valve E.
The chamber H' has connected with it the arms Q for supporting a chimney or other protecting appliance of a mantle employed, the latter being sustained by a wire passed through the opening R in one of the arms Q and engaged by the screw S on said arm.
The operation is as follows: As the portion P is heated and the oil enters the bore B from the supply opening or branch A and entering the chamber 0 it is vaporized, and the vapor then descends the bore 1) and reaches the valve-chamber E, from whence it enters the mixing-chamber G, which, being open at.its lower end,acts as an intake for air,which,with the vapor, enters the chamber I-I,from whence it escapes through the gauze J ,where it is then burned.
The chamber 0 is above the burner, and'the bore B supplies said chamber with oil or fluid. Consequently the flame incloses said chamber, so as to highly heat and cause effectively the vaporization of the oil or fluid.
As the mixing-chamber G is located aside of the casing A, the gas would reach one side of the burner were it not for the deflector I in the chamber H, which deflector,beingin the path of said gas, changes the course of the same in lateral direction, so that it is distributed in the chamber and so uniformly sup plied to the top of said chamber.
Having thus described my invention,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a hydrocarbon-burner, a casing with a vaporizing-chamber'at the upper end thereof, a mixing-chamber at one side of said casing, a distributing-chamber above-said mixing-chamber, in communication therewith, a burner on said distributing-chamber, and a deflector in the latter at the side of the same above said mixing-chamber,
