Description

(No Model.) C. P. TOWARD.
COMBINATION CUTTER, CONNECTOR, AND PLIERS. No. 603,349. Patented May 3, 1898.,
J of the same.
UNITED STATES Y PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES P. TOWARl), OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO E. DELMONT MERRILL AND FRANK D. FOLSOM.
COMBINATION CUTTER, CONNECTOR, AND PLIERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 603,349, dated. May 3, 1898. Application filed May 26,1897. Serial No. 638,181. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES P. TOWARD, residing at Worcester, in the county of forcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Combination Cutter, Connector, and Pliers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to a combination-tool known as a combined pliers and connector, the objectbeing to provide a combination-tool for telegraph-linemens use by means of which wires can be cut, connected, or handled, as described.
Another object of the invention is to pro-- vide a tool which embodies in a single device the features commonly found in several tools now in use.
With these various objects in View my invention consists in the peculiar construction of the various parts and in their novel combination or arrangement, all of which will be fully described hereinafter and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a combination-tool constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation Fig, 3 is a perspective view of the tool opened. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 4 4: of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view of the end of one of the handles, showing the position the catch occupies when not in use. Fig. 7 is a view of a slight modification.
In carrying. out my invention I employ the jaws A and B, pivotally connected at C and together transverse openings are produced, in which the ends of the wire may be held while making connections. T0 the rear of the pivot-point a series of openings D and D are produced, said openings being of different sizes in order to accommodate different gages of wire. The jaws are also recessed from each side, as shown at E, (see Figs. 2 and 5,) in order to provide centrally-located cutting edges F, and I also recess the jaws from one side only, as shown at G, in order to provide a cutting edge H at one side only, the object of such cutting edge at one side being to take up the short ends of the wire which cannot be used by the central cutting edge F.
It will thus be seen that I provide an exceedinglycheap and simple construction of pliers, cutter, and connector, and in order to hold the jaws and handles in their proper positions while the connections are being made I employ a catch I, which is pivotally arranged in the recesses K, produced in the end of one of the handles, such catch having a nose or dog I, which is adapted to engage the end of the opposing handle when in use, and when not in use it rests in a supplemental recess K.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters jaws, and also recessed from one side to provide a side cutting edge, substantially as shown and described.
CHARLES P. TOWARD.
