CAR-COU PLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 603,062, dated April 26, 1898.
Application led August Z8, 1897. Serial No. 649,879. (N0 model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD E. JOY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dexter, in the county of Cowley and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Car-Couplings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to novel and useful improvements in car-couplers; and it has for its object, primarily, to provide acar-coupler that will be simple in construction, durable, and ecient in operation.
Further, the invention contemplates the provision of a ear-coupler that will be automatic in its coupling action, thus avoiding the danger to human life where the cars are coupled by the usual pin and link.
The invention consists in the novel features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter more particularly set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective view of the front portion of the car with my improved coupler applied thereto. Fig. 2 isa longitudinal central section of one of the couplers, showing the same in linceupled position; and Fig. 3 is a similar view of the coupler and its companion in coupled position.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral l indicates the frame, comprising a top bar 2 and a bottom bar 3, connected together at their rear ends by a member 4i and braced at suitable points by members 5.
The numeral 5' indicates the draw-bar, which is provided near its rear end with two elongated slots 6, through which extend two studs 7, having their ends secured to the bars 2 and 3, said studs being for the obvious purpose of limiting the longitudinal movement of the draw-bar. Interposed between the member 4L and the rear end of the draw-bar is a spiral spring 8, which keeps the draw-bar normally forced forward. The front end of the draw-bar is biurcated to form two arms 9 and l() and a recess l1, which recess is adapted to receive one of the bifurcated" ends of the companion coupler when the couplers are in coupled position or as shown in Fig. 3.

Pivotally mounted between the two ears 2O upon the upper side of the draw-bar is a lever 2l, having its forward end pivotally connected with the coupling-pin, said lever being adapted to be rocked to elevate the coupling-pin and maintain the same in position for coupling.
The bifurcated arms are provided with registering slots l2 for the reception of the coupling-pin of the companion coupler when the couplers are brought together in position for coupling.
I preferably interpose between the drawbar and the frame, at the upper and lower sides of the draw-bar, a plurality of leaf or other springs for the purpose of maintaining the draw-bar in its proper relative position to the frame. V
Having described the mechanism wherein the invention lies, I will now proceed to describe its operation.
Assuming the coupling to be in elevated position and maintained in such position by the spring-actuated sliding members described, the couplers are brought together until the slots in the respective draw-bars register and the coupling-pins are in position to be extended through the slots near the rear ends of the recess. A car-coupler, comprising a rearwardlyyielding draw-bar, a suitable frame for said draw-bar having studs passing through elongated slots in the rear portion thereof to limit the horizontal movement of the draw-bar, said draw-bar beingprovided with bifurcated forward end having vertical slots therein for the passage of the coupling-pin carried by the draw-bar, andy the coupling-pin carried by the companion coupler, aspring-pressed coupling-pin in the slot inthe forwardk end of the draw-bar, a lever pivoted upon the draw-bar and having its forward end connected with the coupling-pin, whereby the same iseley vated, a spring-actuated sliding arm having its forward end in engagement with the coupling-pin, whereby the ysame is maintained in elevated position, said member having an arm at its rear end adapted to engage the draw-bar frame when thecars are bron ght tov ing witnesses.
