Description

IMPROVIID STEERING APPARATUS.

Letters Patent No. 60,295, dated DecemberA 4, 1866.
SPECIFICATION TO ALL IVHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, SAM-Unc L. Wannmsnaw, of Baden, in the county of Beaver, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful improvement inSteering Boats and Ships; and I do hereby `declare the followi ing to be a full and exact description thereof, reference being had` to the acizompanying drawings, andto the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention consists in operating the pilot-wheel of boats or ships by means of steam in connection with i.
the mechanism hereinafter described, or the equivalent of said mechanism.
i To enable others` skilled in, the art to make and use my invention, Iwill proceed to describe its construction i and operatiom In the accompanying drawings-- Figure 'lirepresents a front elevation of my improved apparatus for'steering boats and ships.

Figure 3 represents a section` of'the driving-gear, which will be hereinafter described.
In the drawings, A represents the framefor supporting the pilot-wheel and its driving-gear. B represents the pilot-wheel, which is furnished with handles, c, and a bari-ehm, for the tiller-rope;` the wheel and its handles and barrel are constructed in the ordinary manner, and the tiller-rope is placed ou the barrel, :12, in the usual way. On the face of the pilot-wheel B is secured a bevelled wheel marked C, which gears into a bevelled wheel' marked 3, which is secured on 4the sha-ft marked g, which is held in the desired position by thebearings marked 7., 0n the shaft g are two mitre-wheels marked 1 and 2, which gear into the mitre-wheel marked 4, on the shaft` D, which `is held in the desired position by means of the bearings marked 6. The mitre-,wheels 1 and 2 are each furnished with 'a coniformed face marked i, and are so arranged that they will revolve on the shaft g, and are prevented from sliding back or forward on said shaft by means of suitable collars,.or byiany other known and suitable device. Between the mitre-wheels 1 and 2, on shaft ,1],is placed a coupling-sleeve marked 5; this sleeve moves longitudinally on shaft g, and is revolved with the shaft by means of what is termed a feather," which i is shown in lfigure 3, and is marked 9. The coupling-sleeve is furnished with bell-mouthed ends, which in form and size correspond to the coniform face or projections t' of the wheels 1 and 2, and is shifted back and forward on the shaft g, by means of ajointcd lever, m, which is furnished with a locking-roma, the lower end of `which drops into notches, 8, of the disc o of 'the lever m; this locking-rod is operated in connection with disc, 0, and
notches, 8, for the purpose of holding the upper part of lever m in a {ixed postion when changing it from one side to the other of wheel B, as indicated by the dotted lines 10, so that the pilot may ehangehis position from one side of the wheel to the other, which is very desirable, and often absolutely necessary to get the true range of the' boat and the channel. Back of the pilot-wl1eel B and directly opposite to the wheel marked 3, placed a friction pulley marked f, which is used for the purpose of preventing the wheel c, which is on thefaee of the wheel B, from becoming unshipped from the wheel 3 by any warping or springing of the wheel B. As the construction and arrangement of the various parts herein described will readily be understood by the skillful mechanic by reference to the accompanying drawings without further description, I will therefore proceed to` describe the operation of the several parts, and the relation they bear to each in their operation.` The tiller rope is secured on the barrel x inl the ordinary manner, and is connected to the rudder of the boat or ship in the i usual mode.- Steam-power is applied to the crank J', which will revolve the shaft D, which will revolve th'e wheel 4, which will revolve the wheels 1 and 2, without revolving the shaft g. `The wheel B, with its barrel z, is 1 turned to the right or left, as may bc dcsred, by simply shifting thc coupling-sleeve 5 against the coniformed faces z' of the wheels I and 2, which movement of the coupling-sleeve 5 is accomplished by forcing the lever m to the right or left, which movement ofthe lever must correspond to the motion desired of ithe wheel B andits` barrel a. may be revolved in the ordinary manner by operating it with the handles c. The force or power of the wheel 3 f on the wheels C and B, will depend on the force with which the coupling-sleeve 5 is brought up against thc coniformed faces of the wheels 1` and 2, for the shaft g i's dependent upon the coupling-sleeve 5, feather 9, and the 1 friction of the coupling-sleeve against the coniformed faces of the wheels 1 and 2for its motion.` It will readily 1 be observed that various arrangements of the several parts herein described may be adopted and` the desired result obtained.'
