Description
` @uitrit tetta @anni 'ffice IMPROVEMENT IN I MACHINES IIOB. BOXING PAPER COLLARS.
DAN IDL STONER AND JOHN SIGWAL'I, JR., OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS. Letters Patent No. 60,278, dated .December 4, 1866; antedated November 21, 1866.
SPECIFICATION. TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that we, DANIEL Sronnn and .IonN SIGWALT, Jr., of Chicago, in the county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improved Machine for Boxing Paper Collars; and'we do hereby declare and make known that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and the letters and figures marked thereon, which form part of this specication. l
To enable those'skilled in the art to understand how to construct and use our invention, we will proceed to describe its construction and mode of operation with particularity, making reference in so doing to the aforesaid drawings, in which- A Figure 1 represents a side elevation of our machine; and
Figure 2, an end view of the same.
` The same letters of reference in the different figures denote like parts of our invention.
A represents a shaft supported in suitable bearings marked B, as shown, upon which shaft is arranged an.
adjustable sleeve marked C, one end of which'rests against a stationary collar, 6, upon said shaft, as shown,
r while the spring,'S, holds the clutch, D, up against the other end thereof, so that while the rotation of said sleeve in one direction causes the shaft to revolve, said sleeve revolves in the opposite direction independently upon the shaft, the slot, c, inthe clutch, through which a pin, a, upon the A,shaft projects,dallowing a slight longitudinal adjustment of said clutch for that purpose. E represents a circular plate attached to the end of the revolving shaft, A, as shown, upon which plate is xed the concentric semi-cylindrical attachment marked F. Upon the lower end or side of thesaid semifcylinder, F, is attached, as shown, asemi-cylindrical spring, G, which completes a cylindrical form,`upon which the collars are rolled, as hereinafter described. The diameter 'of said cylindrical form. F G, must be less than thediameter of the boxes in which the collarsaro to-be packed. The upper edge of said spring, G, is arranged within the upper edge of the semi-cylinder, F, so as to be pressed iirmly up against said edge at n by its own elastic force. H represents a vertically sliding bar attached `to the rear face of said plate E by the bolts z k, wohich pass through longitudinal slots in the bar H, so as to allow of a reciprocating vertical movement in the bar. There is also a vertical slot cut in the plate E, marked d, through which a pin, I, upon said bar, H, projects, said pin being bent at right angles, as shown, and attached` to the vertical part or appendage of the spring G, so that by pressing down upon said bar, H, the spring G is thrown into the position represented by the dotted lines in'g. 2, while upon releasing said bar, H, the elasticity of the spring causes it to resume its former position. i
Having described the construction of our invention, we will now describe its operation.
The proper number .of collars to be packed in one box is taken and arranged together, and the spring, Gi, is pressed down to the position indicated by the dotted lines as aforesaid, when one end of the package of collars is inserted between the jaws thus formed, n, when the spring is released and closes upon said collars, holding Y them rnxly in place. A rotatory motion isl then imparted to the shaft by any suitable means, which closely winds the collars around the cylindrical form, one hand of the operator being kept upon the same to keep the opposite ends in place, when thebox is adjusted upon and over said collars and the spring presseddown to release them, when the collars immediately adjust themselves to the box and are removed'from the machine securely and properly packed therein, when another p'ackage of collars may be taken and the 'operation repeated;
Having described the construction-and operation of our invention, we will now specify what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. We claim a cylindrical form F G and face-plate E, in combination with arotating shaft, or its equivalent,
for imparting a rotating motion thereto, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. We claim, in combination with said face-plate and cylindrical form, the adjustable bar H, operating as and for the purposes set forth. i

JOHN SIGWALT,` JR.
