0. E. SWINK. MEDICINE CARTON.
No. 602,668. Patented Apr. 19,1898.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLIE E. SWINK, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
MEDICINE-CARTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 602,668, dated April 19, 1898.
Application filed November 28,1896. Serial No- 6l3,832. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLIE E. SWINK, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cartons, of which the following is a description.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, wherein like reference-letters indicate like or corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved carton; and Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same, taken in line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
In administering medicine it is very convenient, if not absolutely necessary in many cases, that some form of device be employed to denote to the attendant the exact time and the exact medicine from which the next dose is to be given. My invention is especially adapted for such purpose and is designed in each case to accompany the package or bottle containing the medicine.
To this end it consists, broadly, in constructing such a time-denoter upon the cartons containing the medicine.
It also consists in such other novel construction and combination of parts as may be shown and described, and as are particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, A represents a carton of the well-known type, upon the face of which is constructed or secured a dial B. Hands C D are secured to the dial in sucha manner as to be moved about to a position to indicate The hands are preferably so secured that a slight friction retains them in any set position.
The carton may contain any medicine, in bottles or otherwise, designed to be administered at a future period or periods.
The mode of operation is as follows: The
druggist in putting up the medicine places it in one of my improved cartons with the usual directions as to administering it. At the time of administering the first dose the attendant sees from the druggists label just when the next dose is to be given and at once sets the hands on the dial at that time. The several medicines arethus safelykept and protected in the several individual cartons, each marking the time when next to be given, and thus no confusion or mistake can take place on this score.
The device is simple and inexpensive and at the same time exceedingly convenient and 5 5 useful, preventing errors by stupid or careless attendants and decreasing to a Very great extent the dangers to invalids by reason of confusion as to the administration of proper medicines at the proper time.
It is obvious that one or more hands may be employed, asjpreferred; also, that two sets of hands in different colors may be used, one to denote the time of administering the last dose and the other the time for giving the next dose; but in practice I have found two to be the most satisfactory for all purposes.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As a new article of manufacture, a carton formed to inclose a medicine-bottle and to hold the same in an upright position, having on one of its sides a time-dial and one or more movable hands on the outer face only of the carton pivotally secured at the center of the dial and arranged to be moved over the same as and for the purposes set forth.
