FIRMIN MICHEL, or PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
BEEF-ROASTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 601,812, dated April 5, 1898. Application filed November 20, 1897. Serial No. 669,281. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be itknown that I, FIRMIN MICHEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Beef- Roasters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in automatic roasters for beef and the like, and has for its object to provide an exceedingly simple and effective device which will bring about the automatic rotation of a frame carrying the material to be roasted, thereby presenting said material to the action of the fire in such manner as to bring about an equal cooking thereof.
With this end in view this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth, and then specifically designated by the claim.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, the construction and operation will now be described in detail, referring to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective of an apparatus made in accordance with my improvement; Fig. 2, an elevation thereof, a portion of the chimney being broken away, so as to illustrate the mechanism by which the supports are revolved; and Fig. 3 a plan view thereof.
In carrying out my invention as here embodied, A represents the furnace in which suitable provision is made for the maintenance of a fire, as indicated at B, and from this furnace leads a flue or chimney 0, having located therein an air-motor wheel D'aft'er the manner of an ordinary win d-wheel. This motor-wheel is secured upon the shaft E, having thereon a worm F, which meshes with a worm-wheel G, carried upon the shaft H, whichin turn carries the beveled gear I, mesh.- ing with the corresponding gears J, These last-named gears are each secured upon the shaft K, which runs across the face of the furnace and carries a series of small beveled pinions L, arranged to mesh with corresponding pinions M. The pinions M are secured upon the short spindles N, from which are suspended the supporting-rods O, carrying the chains P. These chains terminate in hooks or other suitable devices for supporting the material Q, which-is to be roasted, so that it is obvious that when the motor-wheel D revolves the supports will be caused to revolve, and consequently the articles suspended therefrom, thereby revolving said articles in front of the furnace, so as to submit all sides thereof to the action of the heat for facilitating the cooking.
The space in which the supporting-chains are suspended is partly inclosed by a casing R, whichis provided with the slide-doors S, so that the space may be entirely inclosed when desired, and yet easy access may be had to the articles contained therein.
From thisfdescription it will be seen that after the fire has been started in the furnace the draft created thereby, which passes up the fine, will cause the motor-wheel to revolve,
thereby revolving the mechanism, as before set forth, and turning the articles being cooked upon their axes, and when the cooking process has been completed these articles may be removed and others substituted therefor, or the fire may be so regulated as to not over-cook the articles, but to preserve them in a heated condition in order that they may be delivered directly from the apparatus to customers purchasing the same.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and-useful is- In combination, a furnace, an open grate therefor, a fiue leading therefrom, a casing inclosin g the space in front of the grate, slid ing doors arranged on curved ways, a series of spindles journaled vertically, a seriesof supporting-rods suspended from said spindles, a series of chains depending from the rods, a cross-shaft, gears carried thereby meshing with gears carried by'the spindles, a set of beveled gears for revolving the crossshaft, a worm-wheel secured upon the beveled gear-shaft, a worm meshing with said wormwheel, and a motor-wheel carried upon the same shaft with the worm, all arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
. FIRMIN MICHEL.
Witnesses S. S. WILLIAMsoN, R. M. PIERCE.
