ATEN'I RICHARD O. POWELL, OF SPRINGFIELD, OHIO.
HANDSAW.
SPECIFICATION forrning part of Letters Patent No. 601,480, dated March 29, 1898.
Application filed October 2 2, 1 897.
. declare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had ,to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates toimprovements in handsaws.
The object of the said invention is to pro- 'vide a detachable handle for the saw-blade which does not depend entirely upon screws tightening the saw-blade in the slotted portion of the handle in order to hold the blade in position.
The essential features of the invention consist in the peculiar formation of the slots in the connecting end of the saw-blade and in the construction of the main retaining-bolt, as hereinafter more fully described in the specification and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a handle and part of a saw-blade embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar side elevation with part of the handle broken away. Fig. 3 is an enlarged elevation of the inner end of the saw-blade detached, showing the retaining-bolts in section. Fig. 4 is an elevation of themain retaining-bolt. Figs. 5 and 6 are views of the screw of the main retaining-bolt.
The handle A may be of any of the numerous forms, with a vertical slot for the reception of the inner end of the saw-blade B. The
handle in the present instance has an open- Serial No. 656,015. (No model.)
saw-blade. In order to avoid any sharp corners that might interfere with the insertion of the saw-blade between the sides of the handle in forming said slot 0, the saw-blade is rounded, as at f and f.
As before stated, the slot 0 is round or substantially so. The entrance-space e to said slot is, however, essentially narrower than the greatest diameter of the slot, which is for a purpose that will presently appear.
b is the main retaining-bolt, that has afinger-piece d, by which it is turned or screwed onto a screw 9, that enters the opening a on the opposite side of the saw-handle. The said bolt is reduced or has two opposite sides 77, hflattened to admit of the body of said bolt entering the slotcthrough the space a. When the saw is moved into the handle, as shown in Fig. 3, the bolt b is in a position to enter said slot, when the sawis inserted,at'ter which the bolt is turned by the fingers to screw it onto the screw g a sufficient distance to tighten it. In thus tightening said bolt it is left in a position with its flattened sides at right angles to the position shown in Fig. 3 and in the position as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. When the said bolt is turned to such position, it locks the saw against any removal irrespective of the clamping attachment due to the tightening of the bolt by screwing it onto the screw g. This is an important feature of my invention, as any accidental loosening of said bolt during the operation of the saw will not make the saw-blade liable to become detached, and a tightening of the bolt by the fingers is sufficient to hold the saw in position. The opening on the side of the sawhandle on which the bolt enters is provided with a flanged thimble 11, which enters said opening a distance equal to the thickness of the head at of said bolt. The head g of the screw 9 has a pointed projection or lug g", which enters a corresponding recess 2" in the side of the handle shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 and prevents said screw from turning when the bolt 1) is being screwed onto it.
- In attaching the saw-blade it is first elevated, with the slot a standing perpendicularly, or nearly so,with the saw-handle about in the position shown in the drawings. In
thus elevating the blade the bolt 7) enters The saw-blade is then swung down said slot.
on the pivot 19. The boltbbeingin a position with the flattened sides h h parallel with the sides of the slot 0, as shown in Fig. 3, it en'- ters the said slot. The said bolt thus acts as a stop to limit the movement of the saw-blade in the handle.
Having described my invention, I claim- The combination with a saw-handle, of a saw-blade provided with a horizontal slot in its upper inner edge, and a circular slot below said horizontal slot, the entrance to said circular slot being essentially narrower than its greatest diameter, a bolt penetrating said horizontal slot and the handle, a second bolt RICHARD C. POWELL.
