FRED BYRON FOSS, OF ROCHESTER, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
PENClL HOLDER, etc.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 600,861, dated March 22, 1898.
Application filed June 24, 1896.
To all whom it nod/y concern:
Be it known thatI, FRED BYRON Foss,a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Rochester, in the county of Strafford and State of New I-Iampshire,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pencil-Holders and Similar Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts wherever found throughout the several views.
This invention relates to pencil-holders and similar devices; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and which is designed to be connected with a garment, such as a coat, vest, or other article, and which while being adapted to hold a pencil, pen-stock, bouquet, or other article is also designed to serve as an advertising medium; and with these and other objects in View the invention consists in the device hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a front or plan view of my improved holder; Fig. 2, a section on the line 2 2 thereof, and Fig. 3 an end view looking in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 1.
In the practice of my invention I provide a base-plate A, which is preferably heartshaped or triangular in form, and which is provided centrally of its larger end with a shank a, which is bent over parallel therewith and provided with a plate or head a which is triangular or heart-shaped in form and the point of which projects in line with and parallel with the point of the base-plate, and secured to the base-plate is a backwardlydirected pin 13, which projects into an open slot 0, formed in the corresponding end of the plate a and I also secure to the base of the plate or head a a cross-head D, provided with side wings d, which are oblong in form and segmental in cross-section and the convex sides of which are directed outwardly and the outer sides or edges of which are adapted to bear upon the head or plate a and are provided with flanges 01 The shank a is made of spring metal, and the parts A and a are preferably formed integrally therewith, and in practice in order Serial No. 596,729. (No model.)
to connect the device with a garment the edge of the latter is passed between the plates A and a as shown in dotted lines at E in Fig. 2, in which position the pin B passes through the material and securely holds the device thereon.
The pencil or other device is inserted between the outwardly-curved or convex wings d and the plate or head a as will be readily understood, and is held in place by friction, and it will be apparent that the form of the side wings d and of the other parts of the device may be changed without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
The cross-head D and the side wings d thereof are also composed of spring metal, and it will be seen that my improved device is well adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and is also comparatively inexpensive, and any suitable form of advertisement of any kind or class may be placed on the back of the plate A and on the entire front of the device, and thus my improved holder for pencils and other articles may serve as an advertising medium.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A holder for pencils and other articles, comprising a base-plate which is provided at one end with a shank which is bent over parallel therewith, and to the end of which is secured another plate, said last-named plate being provided with a cross-head which is secured thereto, and which is provided with side wings which are segmental in cross-section, and the outer edges of which are adapted to bear upon the plate to which the cross-head is secured, said base-plate and the second-named plate connected therewith, being triangular or heart-shaped in form, and the base-plate being provided with a backwardly-directed pin which enters a slot formed in the plate connected therewith, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 19th day of June, 1896.
FRED BYRON FOSS.
