Description

' No ModelJ W. WOOD. TOBACCO PIPE;
No 60 0,760. Patented Mar. 15,1898.-
' WITNESSES.
.Attorney NITE STATES JOHN W. WOOD, OF PINOKNEYVILLE, ILLINOIS.
TOBACCO-PIPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 600,760, dated March 15, 1898. Application filed November 16, 1896. 142.1 612,260. (No model.)
To aIZZ whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that I, JOHN W. WOOD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pinckneyville, in the county of Perry and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Pipes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in pipes, and has more particular relation to tobacco-pipe bowls.
The invention consists of a combination, with a tobacco-pipe bowl having a metallic tube inserted in lower end of bowl, with an upper perforated end and a stem-aperture and a hollow metallic movable cap with a flat bottom to fit over lower end of tube and bottom of bowl, so as to form the bottom of bowl.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a tobacco-pipe embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a central vertical section through the same, and Fig. 3 represents an enlarged detail perspective view of my improved bowl attachment.
Ain the drawings represents the pipe-stem, B the bowl, and O my improved attachment. The said pipe-bowl B is formed with a Vertical passage I), having an apertured partition 1) formed therein, adapted to support the tobacco within the upper portion of said passage b. The upper surface of said partition b is protected by an apertured metallic plate b so that said partition will not become impregnated with the nicotine and other obnoxious portions of the tobacco. The tube 0 is applied in the passage 1) below the partition I) and is provided with an apertured top plate 0, a stem-aperture o, and a closingplug 0 This latter plug comprises a head 0 an annular flange and a stud 0 formed with a socket c. The said removable plug 0 is adapted to be detachably applied in the lower portion of the tube 0, so as to catch and retain all saliva that may pass into the passage 19 from the stem A. When so desired, the said plug 0 may be removed to clean the interior of the tube 0 and the perforations in the top thereof.
It will be observed from the foregoing description that the tobacco in the pipe-bowl is held in such an elevated position by the partition b that the moisture or saliva from the pipe-stem that flows into the tube 0 cannot come into contact with the same, and thus create an excessive amount of nicotine to be drawn into the lungs while smoking.
The tobacco in the upper portion of the pipe-bowl is fully protected from any moisture in the lower portion by means of the perforated top 0, partition I), and perforated plate 19 and thus the aforesaid excessive amount of nicotine is prevented.
By constructing the tube 0 and plug 0 of I metal I prevent the same from becoming saturated with nicotine, and also thus prevent said tube from communicating any nicotine to the smoke drawn through it.
Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination with a tobacco-pipe bowl open top and bottom and formed with an annular shoulder, of a perforated partition resting on said shoulder, a perforated metallic plate mounted above said partition, a perforated metallic lining for the bowl below said partition, and an independently-removable closing-plug formed with an annular upwardly-extending flange adapted to fit within the pipe-bowl, and form a saliva-receiving socket, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
