0.M. HOLMES. CIGAR 0R CIGARETTE PACKAGE.
No. 600,615. Patented Mar. 15,1898.
llivrrnn STATES CHARLES HOLMES, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
CIGAR OR CIGARETTE PACKAGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 600,615, dated March 15, 1898.
Application filed March 1, 1897.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES M. HoLMEs, of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigarette-Packages, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cigarette-boxes having provisions for holding matches; and it has for its object to provide a cheap and simple construction whereby a charge of matches may be securely and safely held on the exterior of a cigarette-box.
The invention consists in the improvements which I will now proceed to describe and claim.
Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a perspective View showing a cigarette-box embodying my invention, the same being partially open. Fig. 2 represents a section on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a sectional view showing the box illustrated in Fig. 1 placed in an outer or inclosing box.
The same letters of reference indicate the same parts in all of the figures.
In the drawings, 0t represents the box or holder, formed to contain a charge of cigarettes b and a charge of matches 0, the cigarette-holding portion of the holder and its cover being shown as made of a single piece of paper folded to. form a box adapted to slide into and out of an inclosing box or case 6. (See Fig. 3.) The front piece or cover a of the holder at is provided with a series of match-holding pockets formed by cementing or otherwise attaching a corrugated sheet d to the flat outer surface of said cover, the inner angles of the sheet (2 bearing on said fiat surface, and by attaching a fiat sheet or strip d to the projecting or outer angles of the corrugated sheet (Z. In this Way two series of triangular spaces or pockets (1 are formed, each adapted to contain a match. The matchholder thus constructed is adapted to hold the matches in a compact row against the outer side.of the box or holder a and at the same time to separate the matches from each other and prevent rubbing contact of any Serial No. 625,491. (No model.)
match against a surface likely to develop 5o igniting friction.
The front piece or cover, which carries the matches, is connected with the cigarette-holdin g portion only at the lower end, and is therefore adapted to be lifted, as indicated in Fig. 1, to facilitate access to the cigarettes. Furthermore, said front piece, besides being hinged to the holder, as above described, constitutes a partition which prevents the cigarettes frombecoming impregnated or tainted by the material of ordinary matches which may be placed in the pockets d.
f represents a wrapping of tin-foil or other suitable material which may be employed to surround the cigarettes. This, however, constitutes no part of my invention and may be omitted.
It will be seen that the package above described constitutes an article of great convenience, supplying a want which is commonly experienced by cigarette-smokers.
The cigarette-holder is of cheap construction and the match pockets do not add materially to the expense of the box, so that the box can be discarded like an ordinary cigarette box or wrapper when the cigarettes and matches have been consumed.
I claim A cigarette box or holder having a flat front piece or cover integral therewith at one end and provided with a corrugated sheet or strip having its inner angles bearing'on said front piece, and a flat outer strip extending across the outer angles of the corrugated strip, said strips and the said flat front piece forming independent match-holding pockets, the said front piece constituting a partition between the matches and the cigarettes, and adapted to be turned up or lifted to facilitate access to the cigarettes.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 26th day of February, A. D. 1897.
CHARLES M. HOLMES.
Witnesses: A. D. HARRISON, P. W. PEZZETTI.
