J. PIERPOINT, VERTICAL WATER TUBE BOILER.
No. 6-00,374. Patented Mar. 8,1898.
INVENTOR WITNESSES nu: Norms FEYERS co, monurm. WASMINGTON. u. c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES PIERPOINT, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
VERTICAL WATER-TUBE BOILER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 600374, dateol March 8, 1898.
Application filed October 28, 1897. Serial No. 656,(389. (No model.)
To clZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES PIERPOINT, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Vertical Water- Tube Boilers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which shows the boiler in a vertical section in a plane at right angles to the drums.
In the drawing, 2 represents the steamdrum belonging to my improved vertical boiler, and 3 and l are banks of tubes which eXtend downwardly therefrom and diverge somewhat from each other. At the lower end of these banks of tubes are mud-drums 5 and 6. These drums are supported by the end walls of the boiler-setting and serve as a base to support the tubes and upper drum.
7 is a wall or partition between the banks of tubes, terminatiug below the steam-drum, so as to constitute two flues 8 and 9, communicating with each other at their upper ends.
10 and 11 are walls on the outer sides of the banks of tubes, and 12 is an outlet-fiue leading from the base of the fiue 9.
The combustion-chamber 13 is Situated beneath the drum 6 and is separated therefrom by an arch 14. This chamber, therefore, is built in or as a part of the boiler structure proper, and I am enabled to economize greatly in space, the boiler being as compact and tak ingup as little floor-room as possible. To permit this arrangement of the combustionchamber, the drum 6 is set at a higher level than the drum 5. These two drums are connected bya circulating pipe or pipes 15, which may be embedded in the side walls of boilersetting, or other arrangement of circulatingpipes may be employed.
In the operation of the boiler the fiame and products of combustion from the chamber 13 rise in the flue 8 through the tubes 4 and finally escape through the fiue 12.
The advantages of the boiler are its compactness, cheapness, and high efiiciency. The boiler also when supported by the drums at its base is free to expand or contract safely, and the Construction afiords facility for convenient enlargement by lengthening the drums and correspondingly widening the banks of tubes.
WVithin the scope of my invention as defined in the claims modifications maybe made in the form and Construction of the parts. For example, as far as the arrangement of the combustion-chamber is concerned I intend to claim it irrespective of the precise Construction of the steam-drum and whether the steam-drum be a single drum or divided into two drums. A supplemental bank of tubes may be placed in the flue 12. The arrangement of the fiue walls may also be changed.
I claim- 1. An upright boiler having upper and lower drums, banks of upright tubes connecting the same, a combustion-chamber under one of the said lower drums, and an arch or partition between the combustion-chamber and the flue to which said drum pertains.
2. An upright boiler having banks of tubes, and lower drums, one lower drum being at a higher level than the other, a combustionchamber under the higher of said drums discharging among the tubes of the bank pertainin g to the other drum, a Wall or parttion between the banks of tubes pertaining to the said lower drums respectively and a partition adapted to direct the heatingases primarily to and among the bank of tubes pertaining to the lower of said drums.
3. An upright boiler having banks of tubes and lower drums, individual flues in which the banks are situate, and a combustionchamber under one of the drums dischargng into the fiue containing the tubes pertaining to the other drum, the drum over the combustion-chamber being elevated above the other drum.
4. An upright boiler having flues 8, 9, banks of tubes 3, 4, situate therein, mud-drums 5, 6, at their lower ends, the drum 6 being at a higher level, a combustion-chamber situate below the drum 6 and discharging into the flue 8, and an outlet-fiue leading from the base of the fiue 6.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
JAMES PIERPOINT.
