SPECIFICATION forming partof Letters Patent No. 609,957, dated August 30, 1898.

Be it known that I, THOMAS H. BRosNIHAN, a citizen of the United States,residin g at Li vermore Falls,in the county of Androscoggin and the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to rowlocks for rowboats, and. particularly to that class thereof which are adapted for use in connection with Outriggers; and the object of the invention is to provide improved devices of this class which are simple in construction and operation and which are designed to be quickly and easily connected with the Outriggers and which are so constructed as to reduce the friction to a minimum, and I also provide a simple and effective device for holding the oar therein. 7
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of one of my improved rowlocks, part of the construction being shown in section; and Fig. 2, a front view thereof.
In the drawings forming part of this specification the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the sameletters of reference in both of the views, and in the practice of my invention I provide a rowlock which consists of a tubular head P, through which passes a bolt P said bolt being provided at its upper end with a head P and being screw-threaded at its lower end, as shown at P and mounted on the lower end or screwthreaded portion of said bolt is a collar P and said collar and the head P are provided each with an annular groove P and the upper and lower ends of the tubular head P are pro Vided with corresponding interior annular grooves P and placed in the annular spaces formed by these grooves at the upper and lower ends of the tubular head P are ball- The tubular head P of the rowlock is provided at its lower end with an outwardly-directed arm P, which is provided with an upwardly directed extension 0, in the upper smart. 654,545. end of which is a slot 0 and the tubular head P is also provided at its upper end with a short outwardly-curved arm R, in which is pivoted a lever R which is provided with a downwardly-directed curved end R which fits in a corresponding vertical groove R formed in the vertical bearing R of therowlock which is formed on the side of the tubular head P, and the free end of the lever R is adapted to rest in the slot 0 of the upwardly-directed extension '0 of the arm P, and when said lever B is in the position shown in full lines in the drawings the oar will be held in the rowlock, and when the oar is raised up out of the rowlock the lever R will assume the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
The upwardly-directed extension 0 of the arm P forms the front bearing for the oar and is curved to one side, as shown in Fig. 2, so as to give free movement to the oar, and that side of the open space through which the oar is passed or in which the oar is placed and which is formed on the tubular head P is widened and beveled, as shown in Fig. 2, and when the lever R is in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1 the oar will be locked in the rowlock, as will be readily understood.
It will be apparent that the bolt P is in practice secured to the Outriggers, and the tubular head P of the rowlock is free to turn thereon, and the bearings P reduce the friction occasioned by the operation of the device to a minimum, and my improved rowlock is simple in construction and operation and well adapted to produce the result for which it is intended, and it will also be apparent that changes in and modifications of the various parts thereof may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
- Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. A rowlock for row-boats, said rowlock consisting of a tubular head, a rod sleeved therein provided with a head at one end and screw-threads at the other end, ball-bearings arranged between said rod-head and the upper portion of the tubular head, a bearing ar ranged upon one side of the tubular head having a vertical groove, an outwardly and upwardly directed arni integral With said bearing and provided with a slot in its upper end, an outwardly-curved arm integral with the upper portion of said bearing, and an angular lever pivoted in said arm one end of which engages the slotted end of the outwardly-directed arm and the lower end of which engages the groove in said bearing, substantially as described.
2. A rowlock for row-boats, said rowlock consisting of a tubular head, a rod sleeved therein provided with a head at one end and screw-threads at the other, a collar arranged upon the threaded end of said rod, ball-bearings arranged between the rod-head and said collar and the upper and lower portions respectively of said tubular head, a bearing arranged upon one side of the tubular head having a vertical groove, an outwardly and upwardly directed arm integral with said bearing and provided with a slot in its upper end, an outwardly-curved arm integral with the upper portion of said bearing, and an angular lever pivoted in said arm one end of which engages the slotted end of the outwardly-directed arm and the lower end of which engages the groove in said bearing, substantially as described.
